Steele is a malamute because they were bred to pull heavy loads, like a sleder and tons of cargo...
but there is a possibility that he's a husky as well.

Where have I seen that same opening line before, as a response to someone correcting a member for claiming something, about a breed, that was not true?
The material below is as much for Balto Wolfdog as it is for Katie_GSD, in claiming, in one way or another, that Steele doesn't look like (or much like) an Alaskan Malamute (all of these photos, apart from the image of Steele, were taken from the following website: http://www.malamute.org):

And, FINALLY, as to the question of whether or not Alaskan Malamutes can have blue eyes:
AND, as I've also posted before, should any of you be interested in seeing what the American Kennel Club, at least, has to say in its breed standard for the Alaskan Malamute (the section pertaining to eye color issues is at the bottom of this page): http://www.akc.org/breeds/alaskan_malamute/index.cfm.
Look - it REALLY doesn't matter what breed Steele is...the Balto cartoon is just that... a cartoon. Still, it is not wrong to consider the possibilities, and it is definitely not a mistake to think of him as a Malamute. As has been proven already, Alaskan Malamutes can have the kinds of markings, coat color and eye color which Steele has. The photographic proof is right in this post (unless every Malamute owner, who posted pics on that referenced site, is lying - and actually posted pics of huskies...which is a ridiculous thing to even consider).
(As I said the last time someone responded this way to being proven mistaken about a question pertaining to dog breeds, I'd REALLY like to know what dog "experts" said that Alaskan Malamutes cannot have blue eyes. THAT would be interesting to know.)

Now,now, hold on,it goes triple for me,because I agree with Balto WolfDog,Steele is not an Alaskan Malamute,in which case I'm wrong,a typical error on my behalf, sorry.

Well, as I said, it's just a cartoon. Technically, NO ONE is wrong for believing what they believe about Steele's breed (which I've also said in plenty of places). What I was correcting was this odd notion, among several people, that Steele cannot possibly be an Alaskan Malamute either because he has blue eyes (and "Alaskan Malamutes don't", which is wrong), or because he has the kinds of markings that Alaskan Malamutes do not...which is also wrong.

Well, dude, no one's picking on you, but facts are facts. And any self-professed "dog expert" who told you that Alaskan Malamutes don't (or can't) have blue eyes is simply wrong. Additionally, if you look at any breeder page (for Malamutes), you will find many which have markings just like Steele. I am skeptical of any kid or teen who would profess to be an "expert" on anything...they just don't have sufficient life experience. I am sorry if that offends some of you, but my intent is not to offend or start a flame war. Hell, I also thought I was pretty expert on some things when I was a teenager. And then I grew up, and realized how little I really knew then. An actual well-rounded dog expert would know full-well about Malamutes. I am hardly one, and have never owned one, and yet I know that Malamutes CAN have blue eyes. Err, I never said anyone was picking on me. Everyone can make mistakes, and no one is perfect when it comes to dog breeds and info. While I really only know alot about the Border Collie breed, that's the only breed I really did much research on. Maybe alittle tiny bit of research for huskies and malamutes. I found some malamutes that looked like Steele, but I seen many photos of Huskies that look alot like him. This is only a photo of his head, and the husky head. Okay, I get it now. You think that Steele is a malmute, looks like a malamute, that's you. I think that Steele is a husky. No one knows what breed he is, this is a cartoon, and what-so-ever. I said I made a mistake, because I believed tons of people on this site that said Alaskan Malamutes cannot have blue eyes. I did my tiny bit of research for malamutes, and I now believe they have blue eyes. Good for them. This is all I am going to say before this turns to some war, which I don't want.

Well, that's nice of you to point this out...now. Your original response, which included the statement "Okay, well sorry for listening to dog 'experts' on here" looked a heck of lot like self-pitious sour grapes. I wasn't trying to flame you...I was just trying to correct the mistake. Balto Wolfdog wrote: Okay, I get it now. You think that Steele is a malmute, looks like a malamute, that's you. Okay...well, I'm not faulting you for that. And, if you read the bottom half of that post I made, I pointed that out quite clearly. And while you did say pretty much the same in your initial post, you were also the first one to deal in absolutes, by saying that he couldn't be a Malamute because Malamutes could not have blue eyes. I, on the other hand, never said he couldn't be anything...only that he could be a Malamute because Malamutes CAN have blue eyes.
Once again, I was just correcting the error, and also correcting a similar error by another person (as indicated in that post). And again, I was not trying to start a flame war. If you are that concerned that it will become that, then we can kill the conversation.
I really don't get this nitty paranoia and skittishness so many members have with intellectual debate over a subject. They ALWAYS seem to fear that it's going to devolve into a flame war. This had no indications of it. And I wouldn't have made any effort to make it so. It seemed to me to be going pretty well. I had no intentions of arguing or fighting, and I still don't.

i think that he is a husky
malamutes don't have blue eyes
malamutes have wider paws and body
malamutes are more fury(i might be wrong on this one)
malamutes are nice and kind(not that huskies aren't), but i don't think that a malamute would act like Steele
however, Steele is TOO BIG for husky, but i reckon he is a cross between husky and another "big and tall but thin" breed.

As I have already proven above, in a previous post, Alaskan Malamutes, like ALL northern breeds, most definitely can have blue eyes. Just because the breed standard says that blue eyes are penalized does not mean that they don't exist in Malamutes. In fact, the breed standard also implies that they can have blue eyes.
It's amazing how misinformation about a breed is perpetrated by show and conformation breeders. ( Double )
Further, any dog has the potential to be "unkind" (or, as is said in the dog world, "aggressive"). Irrelevant, however...Steele's a cartoon character.
Alaskan Malamutes are extremely close in relation to modern Siberian Huskies. They happen to be taller, and their coats are usually longer. Those are the only major differences. Modern huskies and Malamutes can have the same kinds of colors and markings, the same eye colors, modern huskies can have long coats like Malamutes, modern huskies are shorter of leg and bulkier like Malamutes.
When I say "modern Siberian Huskies", I mean the breed that was developed out of the original Siberian husky (of the Chukchi Siberian stock), which is now known as the Seppala Siberian Sled Dog...and is universally recognized as the ORIGINAL Siberian husky...with longer leg, shorter coat, and thinner body. Faster and sleeker than any modern Siberian Husky.

Steele is an Alaskan Malamute. Trust me I know Dogs. When my sister first saw Balto, she sisn't know what kind of dog Jenna was. I told her(before they said it on tv) that she was a siberian husky. If you look at Steele, and then look at Jenna, you'll notice that Steele is bigger and built bigger than Jenna. Huskys are smaller than Malamutes. Malamutes are used for heavy lifting, Huskies are used to travel long distances. That's how I know.

Who honestly cares?
It's animation. It's not real. You can't expect every dog to look like a pedigree.
