Pretty funny, I found an article that says pretty much the same thing as me :
http://nl.newsbank.com/nl-search/we/Arc ... l=GooglePM
Quote: `BALTO' SHOULD FARE BETTER ON THE SMALL SCREEN Published on April 7, 1996 Author(s): Michael Blowen, Globe Staff
NEW RELEASES: "Balto" -- Although it was one of Steven Spielberg's very few failures in theaters, this animated feature should do very well on video. Based on the true story of the Alaskan sled dogs who deliver serum to sick children in 1925 Nome, this adventure is the visual equivalent of a Jack London story. It has an edge, and sense of metaphor, often lacking in animated features.

it should be noted that Balto did make more money than the other Non-Disney films of 1995 Thief and The Cobbler,Pebble and the Penguin etc..
and has merchandise where the other ones don't .. even We're Back! had merchandise , not as much as Balto and the other Amblimation projects though.

I have to say the lack of advertising Universal did with Balto was so ridiculous it's embarrasing, I see posters at bus stops advertising movies not worth the paper it's printed on and are directed at one group of viewers unlike Balto which was aimed at ALL audiences.
Spirit did'nt get a large amount of advertisement either but it still had more than Balto was given, I saw large posters on the side of buses for Spirit yet I saw not a single poster for Balto...and if I had I would've seen it in theaters when it was released but with nothing advertising it's release I never even knew it existed until I stumbled over this site a while back then I went looking for the movies, it's such a pity Universal abandoned Balto so badly that people literally have to fall over a fan website or movie in a junk store to find out about it.
Balto is a rare gem that deserves much more than it got or is getting right now, if only Universal would look and see what could be made from Balto if given the chance.
....Actually, if stumbing across fan-sites is the best way to promote Balto and get more Fans, may I have your permission Steet to use the 'Balto Source' name in posters promoting this site? It would'nt cost me much and would/could greatly increase the amount of interest in Balto.

Well, I guess it's always possible to find worse...But there you really searched for the far bottom of the animation field. Yes of course, but I fear that local attempts like this will never have a big impact...Well it's always nice to try.

Thanks Steet, it may not make a massive impact like actual advertisement from Universal but since that is'nt likely anytime soon it's worth a shot......at least I'd get an A for effort.

I didn't see you say that lol.. in fact I said that in my last post.
Merchandise and promotional stuff can be a fine line e.g. is the KFC toy official merchandise or a promotion? I would swing more towards promotional. However such things as the merchandised artwork was (and still is) available world wide you just gotta know who to talk to. Plus the larger percentage was available here in the UK which makes sense as it was made here. Anyway I personally prefer the way the merchandise was released, it makes it more of a challenge for me which keeps life interesting. But hey that is me being selfish but then Balto is a magical film which finds you instead of the other way round. How many movies can you say do that?
Umm France must be way behind the times as I never ever see TLK stuff in shops. I think we need to think more world wide in that case, we have enough people for that.

The petition has already been released, remember. I don't know how many would have been enough for Universal though.

In Finland Balto 3 Wings of Change Aka "Muutosten Tuulet" didn't have anything, I found it by accident from one toy magazine I started to read in boredom in my friends place. I found out that it was there but it was small picture and there was no information nor anything like it only price and screenpic. Pretty attractive? And after Christmas it came in sales in here, at least I remember it. Balto 2 However yes nothing to see that it was in Finland. Accident once again in Pori Euromarket I found it from VHS and DVD area, surprisingly I took it with and of course watched in summer house.
Nowadays one shop near by my house is almost ONLY SHOP in whole city I live that still sells Balto 2 WQ. Surprisingly no one never bought it, at least I've not seen them being sold out always there is them. They might have big storage of those DVD stuff but who knows (At least they sell information about WW2 and Hitler a lot in that shop Lo)
I'm not sure...I've not seen so much of adversiment about Balto, From Balto 2 was trailer in Beethowen 4 if I remember it right...and well it was in English and I believe that English actors were much better than Finnish ones...(Too old to listen Finnish in cartoons me want English )

I sent the article to Phil Weinstein (director of the sequels) and he answered this :
Hello Steet,
Your timeline seemed to be a pretty accurate representation of the
facts as far as I know. We were challenged with making a follow up
to a brilliant movie. Our budget limitations prevented us from
achieving the same quality level as the original, but I hope viewed
as worthy sequels nonetheless. I loved the emotional arc with Aleu
in part 2. Having the experience of directing part 2, I had a much
better handle on how to improve the look for part 3 but was
disappointed to not see Steele return in some fashion. I pitched the
idea of Steele being the one who joins Balto on the rescue of the
pilot. This beaten down bad guy from part one emerges when no on
will join Balto on the rescue. The whole time Steele and Balto are
in the wilderness, you are wondering; is Steele really going to help
Balto, or is this just his chance to get Balto alone, so he can get
rid of him once and for all? To me, the emotional tension would have
been awesome. But, I am hired to take the film into production, the
script is done and the clock is ticking, so best I could do was stick
some of the original characters in throw away scenes, as background.
Maybe we'll see him in part 4!
Thanks for all the hard work.
Phil

You are pretty much right on, Steet. I found one factual error though. Balto was released one month (30 days) after Toy Story, not a few days. That said, I agree that it was a hugh mistake that Balto was released while Toy Story was still at first-run cinemas. Even a mid-late January release would have been better since Toy Story would have run its course.
