I actually thought that at first too, even though all the articles about him said that he was a Siberian Husky. But then i learned that one of the fourteen colors that Huskies come in is "mostly black" just like the real Balto.

Balto is most likely a Husky. In the 1920's the name "Siberian Husky" was not yet used. It was just Husky. And Huskies were the main breed they used for the Serum Run. And Balto looks most like a Husky.

You can aways look up on the internet, on what that breed looks like.
And this is what the breed looks like, in a different picture.

Yes everyone, it is an un-canny coincidence here.
But fact does say that Balto was Siberian Husky. Though, you never know, there may be some of this breed in his blood, a slight possibility. His interesting markings are exactly the same, so that may be where they have come from, but I think I would have to search deeper into that. After all, the best sled dogs are a mix

Here's a photo of him being displayed at the Cleveland Museum of Natural History, Cleveland, Ohio. http://www.flickr.com/photos/30706946@N00/428563937/

Yep. He doesn't look just like a modern Siberian, but things change over time, and apparently he is (or at least mostly is.)
I assume Seppala was the deleted user on the first page? Well, I agree with him/her; all of those breeds listed fall under the Spitz/Nordic dogs category together and are going to naturally be very similar to one another..

Balto reminds me of lots of dogs. Even my aunt's Germin shepherd dog. (Even the fact that, Jazzy is white.)
