I didn't like it much myself. They (universal) repeated the same mistake they made in the first Balto.
In the first one, they came up with Jenna, who looks (at first glance) like a bit of a goody girl, someone who you might picture saying "I broke a nail" or something, with her perfect grooming and whatnot, but then she attacks a bear. Atacks a Bear! something that shows how strong of a character she is. showing she can hold her own with Balto, in dertermination and heart at the end of the movie, I pictured Balto and Jenna running off on some adventure together.
Then in wolf quest she get's like five minutes of screen time.
Essentially they ditched her character.
In WQ they set up this awesome character (Aleu) who has an obvious problem, that needs a resolution. The whole "Leader of a wolf pack" thing was good, something that fit her character, she was a bit... uh... freespirited.
Anyway at the end she just goes away.
Univerasal just threw this awesome character, who they spent an entire movie getting you to love and care for, in the trash.
Well the first thing I did when I wrote Jenna's Journey (to give Jenna the adventure I always thought she should have, injecting a little bit more of the "fight a bear" mentalilty into her and [draining is not the word] but... well talking a little bit of the "innocent bystander" out of her.) was establish the fact that the following year, the ice bridge showed up again, and the elk or carribou or whatever the heck they were (I can't remember) ran back across the ice, and guess who followed?
ALEU! She still leads a pack in my stories, she gets a mate has kids, defends her pack loses it and gets it back again. I made Aleu a workable character, yet she still answered her calling and is quite independant of her parents. My question?
WHY COULDN'T UNIVERSAL HAVE DONE SOMETHING LIKE THIS!!!!
I don't understand.
Oh well, I guess it's just a movie, and (at least in my Balto Universe) I fixed it so.... I'll let it go... for now.
P.S. What did Balto tell Jenna?
Here's a situation for ya!
Jenna: Oh hey Balto, glad to see you made it back, where's Aleu?
Balto: Oh, I found her, but it was her destiny.... I let her float away on a piece of ice with a pack which I really know not the slightest about.
Jenna: (Beats Balto up and goes to find someone smarter)
No that last part wouldn't happen.
Jenna's too good a character to do something like that, but really, what was going through Balto's head! What would Jenna think?
