he's a huskie, though, in the film he's a wolf/husky cross.
NOT a malamute, he looks NOTHING like one...
Steele COULD be a malamute, I'm pretty sure......

That's correct. Though dogs of his breed were not officially called "Siberian Huskies", people were calling them that at the time (as well as other names). Their use would be more meant to refer to the dogs as "huskies from Siberia". As I said in three other threads here, the term "husky" was used to generally describe ANY dog that worked on a sled team...no matter his (or her) breed.
The Chukchi dogs which became popular as fast sled dogs in the Alaskan territory, during the early twentieth century, were not refined as a single breed, and not officially recognized as (or called) "Siberian Huskies"...as a breed...until the 1930s.
Balto was definitely of the Chukchi stock of huskies from Siberia...as were Togo, Fritz, Fox, and countless other dogs.

Balto IS a purebred husky. But he wasn't Siberian. He was an Alaskan husky. I've got this whole section in 'Bonus Features' on my Balto 1 DVD; and it has the whole true story there, with video images of the real Balto

Balto most definitely was not an Alaskan husky. As any musher or northern breed dog breeder will tell you, Alaskan huskies are a mixed breed, without a unified genetic foundation.
He was a Siberian husky. Most definitely.

It seems that a Wikipedia editor found a source that stated that Balto was an Alaskan Malamute and thus changed Balto's breed to Alaskan Malamute in the Balto article. The source is The Alaskan Malamute: Yesterday and Today by Barbara Brooks and it is a breed book on the Alaskan Malamute. I do not trust breed books because they usually have many errors. I know this is incorrect because books on the serum state that he is a Siberian Husky. Also Leonard Seppala only bred Siberians.
I changed Balto's breed to Siberian Husky and provided The Cruelest Miles as a source. I even stated that some sources Unfortunately, I was trumped again by a page on Balto 's statue on the Central Park website that also states that he is an Alaskan Malamute. I changed it back again. As of the time of this post, the article states that he is a Siberian, although I don't know how long this is going to last.
