No, I doubt he could be. Alaskan Malamutes are HUGE. Well, bigger than other huskies. Take a look at these:

Those last ones though, are actually only a little bigger than other huskies. But still, take a look at the real Balto:

He's actually quite small...While he COULD be malamute or whatever, he looks too small to be one.

The book I read was published in the 60's. It couldn't have got stuff from the movie! And Balto has wolf features if you look at the photos. So there!

does anyone here have the dvd extras of the first film? if you do watch them it explains all of this balto wasn't quick enough for a race sled he was a freight dog, it also says he was a malamute (pure breed). they only made him half wolf so they could make a story!

Balto definately was not half wolf in rea life. Every documentary that I've read about him said that he was a pure-bred husky. If you don't believe me, look here. It's at the bottom of the page.

It would have been cool if he was, but the only way to really tell 100% for sure would be to do a blood test... And since he's kinda dead, that wouldn't work... But out of the tons of places I've looked I've only seen one place that said he was 50% wolf. The rest says he was a full blooded huskey.

Yeah, I've got the extra. I've forgotten most of it, but I remember the extra bit saying that he was a pure-bred and the bit you said about why they made him half wolf. I don't remember the malamute bit, but it's been a while since I've watched it, I'll have to watch that bit again. I remember it said that the real Balto was considered slow and was a freight dog.

Anyway, it'd be cool if the real Balto was half wolf, because then wolves may have had a better reputation (you know, people always describe them as violent, that type of thing), but he wasn't.
According to wikipedia it's his breed is unknown, but we know that he's either a Malamute or a Siberean Husky and not a wolf. I'll watch the extra on the Balto 1 dvd later probably to check what it says.

ha You are all wrong! Balto wasent a husky or a malamute or even a eskino dog. he was a Laphund a raindeer herder. I know this from like mabye seven months of research I had to do on this history prodject. here is a picture of Balto and then a picture of a Laphund http://www.depart-arrivee.com/albums/ar ... .sized.jpg
