Yay, I have made progress! I was working on random parts of this fic and I split up Part 3 (the other half of Part 3 is Part 4 - Part 4 is currently in progress), so I have two parts of the story completed!
These parts were interesting to write: you get to find out about what happens to Dusty, and even learn a bit about her past. yay. Plus things start to get violent.
WARNING: These two parts contain a mature (not so graphic) mating scene, a "graphic" birth scene, and some rather fowl language (of course most of the language won't show up here, so if you want the uncensored version of the two latest parts, click
HERE for both of these parts.).
If these situations disturb you, please go back. These two parts are rated R for safety purposes.
You were warned.

Part TWO
Spring. The birth of a new friendship . . . . .
The air was crisp and tantalizing as it was filled with the smell of the herring in the waters near town. A passing boat tooted its deep horn to the sled team that was making their daily rounds. It had been only a couple of weeks since the sled team's race against the bush plane and they were still well-respected for helping Kodi's father, Balto, save the fallen pilot, Duke. After much deliberation, the town council and the mail teams made a deal that during the late-spring and summer, the bush plane would deliver the mail, giving the mail dogs a much deserved break for a change.
Also this gave Kodi a chance to start his training with Dusty. Even after leading their rescue mission, Kodi still needed a bit of work. When the sled team’s break started, Dusty was eager to meet with him and get to know him a little better, especially after seeing the way his mood changed every so often. Little did she realize, Dusty was becoming interested in the brave, rust-colored mixed breed.
Dusty was up at dawn, stretching her body in the glow of the rising sun that echoed over the mountain peaks near the town. She let out a yawn and took a quick drink of cool water from her bowl before heading to the beach's shore on the outskirts of Nome. The sunlight made the water glitter with life as she crept closer to where she saw the shadow of a dog running on the shoreline, constantly splashing water onto his body with his large, wolf-like paws. She couldn't stop watching him - his physique was strong, like a perfect mix of a husky and a wolf, his determination was strong and true - and the gray husky began to blush a speckle of pink. She was hiding behind a large rock that was surrounded by soft grass that was growing by the sea. The splashing got louder, as the figure got closer . . . .
SPLASH!
"AAH!"
The red pup turned his head towards the sound behind the now soaked stone and spotted the small gray husky, wet with water and grinning embarrassingly.
“Dusty?” Kodi asked. “What are you doing here?”
“Sorry! I’m all wet . . .” Dusty gave him a gawky expression that suddenly caused them to burst into uncontrollable laughter.
“No, it’s my fault that you got wet.” Kodi said, still giggling over the sight of the wet gray dog. “Are you here to start training me?”
“Yeah, how did you guess?” Dusty stood up and leapt onto dry sand, shaking off the water from her body. Much of the water landed on Kodi’s fur. “Hee.” She chuckled, before licking herself clean and standing next to the now panting quarter-breed. “Now, I’ve seen what you made of as part of a team. Let’s see if you can beat me on your own!”
“This should be a piece of cake!” Kodi said, grinning excitedly. “I’ll even give you a head start!”
“All right,” She took off on the golden sand of the beach, running at a quick yet steady pace. “Catch me if you can, Kodi!” Dusty giggled.
“Hey! Wait for me!” Kodi shouted, following behind her trail of paw prints in a very fast run. Both of them were soon neck and neck, panting with their tongues blowing in the breeze. Suddenly, the burgundy husky began to slow down and fall behind until he gradually slowed to a stop.
“I . . . can’t . . . . keep . . . up . . . .” Kodi huffed and puffed, exhausted from the run. “You . . . win.” He then collapsed onto the sand and grass.
Dusty trotted up to his heaving body with a slight laugh. “What’s the matter, Kodi? Not fast enough for me?”
“No, I’m fast, but . . .” Kodi looked up at the silver dog. “You’re much faster. How is that so?”
“Well, I guess you have to pace yourself,” She lectured him. “You ran so fast when you were trying to catch up to me, but you were using up most of your strength and power by speeding up. Next time,” the husky walked back to a starting point and then ran forward for about a hundred meters. “Just travel in a steady pace and you’ll conserve your energy for the moments that you need it most. Does that help you, Kodi?”
“Yeah!” Kodi said in a happy tone. “Just after I take a quick rest, okay?”
Dusty laughed. “Of course. I guess I’ll take a rest too. That was a nice run though!” She let out a sigh while lying down beside the red husky, and resting her head on her forelegs, which were crossed in front of her. “You’re pretty good, Kodi, and I believe that you can be one of the best sled dogs that I’ve ever seen!”
She didn’t know what forces of nature were about to take hold of her, but it happened. “I think that you really are becoming to be your father’s son, Kodi,” She then closed her blue-gray eyes and licked Kodi’s white cheek. “And I feel quite honored to be your trainer, even though I was hesitant to do it at first.”
Kodi’s face was pink as she spoke. “Wow. Thanks for saying that, Dusty. I’m glad you’re my trainer too. You’re really smart and experienced with dog-sledding!” His eyes then closed as tears of joy swelled up in his tear ducts. “I remember when I was younger when I used to run with my brothers and sisters. I could never keep up with them, even if I ran as fast as I could. But then, my dad showed me how to believe in myself and run with the spirit of my heart. And now, you have also helped me achieve my dream of being a sled dog. You honestly have no idea how much this means to me, Dusty.”
“Oh, I do,” Dusty said, with a feeling of sadness in her voice. “As a pup, I had no real family. I was adopted by a surrogate husky family from in town, so I have no memories of my real parents. Most likely, they were of wolf blood, like in your father, or true wolves from the outskirts of the mountains near Nome. I struggled to fit in: I was a runt of the litter, smaller than any other pup in my foster mother’s litter. All I ever wanted was to find a way for me to truly belong. I loved to run, so my master thought that I’d be good on a dogsled team. And the idea worked – the team ended up becoming one of the fastest teams from Nome and I was an important part of its success.”
“That’s amazing.” Kodi said, surprised by Dusty’s tale. “I never knew how hard things were for you. I mean, I was the runt of my litter too, but I still had both of my parents.”
“And your father was such a hero too. That’s some big paws to follow!”
“You’re telling me!” Kodi chuckled. “Everyone sees such big potential in me, all because of my father’s heroism three years ago. They think that since I’m his son, I’m going to be as fast as him.”
“It’s okay,” Dusty calmed him. “Just be yourself. There’s no way that you can be your father, but a part of him is inside you.”
“I know that,” Kodi said, now sitting up and looking out at the sea. “Somehow, I feel at peace. I’m wolf and husky, but I’m also me! Ah, I understand now . . .” He turned to Dusty and smiled. “Thanks for listening to me and helping me out. It feels so nice to have someone to listen to you when you have problems.”
“You’re welcome, Kodi! If you ever need someone to ask a question to, I’m the one to call!” Dusty smiled back.
“And I’ll be sure to answer you when you have a question too, Dusty! Hopefully I can give you the right answers!” The rusty husky grinned wider.
“You know, you’re cute looking when you smile!” Kodi looked embarrassed as he blushed red. She then took off in a sprint. “Ready for a rematch?”
“Sure! I’ll catch you this time for sure!” Kodi chased after her like a love-struck pup until they were running parallel to each other on the shallow shore where the sands met the seas. The sun rose higher and higher, causing their shadows to overlap and combine with each other as they ran in unison. The run only lasted about ten minutes, but to the two of them, it felt like time was placed on hold for such a perfect moment.
Moments later, Ralph, Kirby, and the rest of the sled team joined them in the water, and they all began to have a splashing time in waters outside of their hometown. The rest of the season continued onward like this – Dusty and Kodi trained early in the morning, then they would talk about things and life, and finally the entire team played for the remainder of the day until evening time.
All that the dogs hoped was that this fun time that they had would never end. However, they had no idea that the spring season had started a budding new relationship that was just beginning to head for the next level.
----------------------
You are my truest love, but I loved another more than you . . . . who loved me as well . . . .
----------------------
Summer. Friendship goes to the next level . . . . and then some . . . . .
The dogs were strangely enjoying their break from running the trail from Nome to White Mountain. The sun was shining high in the sky, surrounded by the bright azure pool of sky and cotton-ball clouds. A slight breeze blew in the bustling town, as Duke's bush plane, now renamed "The Balto Flyer", took off from the entrance of town, heading for its journey to retrieve mail from White Mountain.
Dusty tried to keep herself away from Kodi for a while, now that his training was over, and spend some time with Ralph, to try and see if they could go steady, for once. She knew she was destined to be Ralph’s mate, due to an arranged marriage set by Ralph’s parents. His family believed in arranged marriages, and they had no idea that his chosen mate would be in the same sled team as him.
Dusty and Ralph were able to hang out together over the summer, but not alone. The rest of the team usually interrupted their private time and they would all go out for some fun on the beach. The summertime sun gave them the perfect rest and relaxation that they needed so badly. And time to think about their futures.
Now it was time for the young gray husky to make a choice. Deep inside her, she loved them both. Although she was already betrothed to Ralph, Dusty wanted to make love with both of them. She hated the fact of already being engaged to another, and wished that there was something that she could do to rid of this marriage by choosing her mate because of love, not because of some parental arrangement. Unfortunately, she could only have pups with one, and stay with that one forever. The decision racked at her mind for days, weeks, until she couldn't take it anymore. She hoped that whichever one loved her most would come up and choose her themselves. That’s the way she would decide this.
One late July night, the moon rose high into the sky like a bright white button was stitched into the starry fabric of the evening sky. Summer was near its end, but love was about to take its course, whether it was the right decision or not.
Kodi walked outside of the boiler room where the sled dogs were taking their rest and headed for a nearby hill covered with a frosty grass. There he saw her - she looked like an angel that was heaven sent. Her light gray coat seemed to shimmer underneath the lunar spotlight, and her gaze turned to him - oh, how her eyes sparkled like the rarest blue diamonds on earth. Unfortunately, he didn't realize who it was, but the female knew that rusty-colored coat anywhere.
"Kodi?"
"Huh? Dusty?" he answered back, finally hearing his "angel's" voice. "You're . . . you're so . . ."
"So, what?" she was curious to hear what the quarter-wolf would say next.
"Beautiful." He completed, slightly blushing. "Dusty, you're beautiful. And I . . . . I love you."
She let out a gasp, and stepped backwards as she felt her heart skip a beat. "No one's ever called me that before . . ." Her light gray face was now showered in a speckle of light pink. Her eyelids lowered as tears swelled into her eyes. "Oh, Kodi . . . ." she fainted onto the grass.
"Dusty!" He approached her as she slowly repositioned herself into a slightly submissive position on her back with her hind legs apart. "What the hell are you doing? Is there something wrong with your legs? Do you need help standing? I . . I can help you get back to the boiler room -"
"No, Kodiak . . . ." Dusty silenced him, speaking in a calm, almost sensual tone. "I'm fine, . . . I'm just in heat."
"Huh? What? You . . . you don't mean . . ."
"Yes," She rolled back onto her stomach and crawled up closer to Kodi's chest, stroking her muzzle in a circular motion on his furry whiteness. She then lifted her nose to his and kissed it. "Kodi . . . I want you . . . all of you . . . inside me."
Kodi's white cheeks turned bright pink. "Inside?" He gulped, turning a darker shade of pink by the second. "But . . . but, Dusty! I've never done that before!"
She let out a giggle. "Neither have I. These feelings and reactions that I feel right now are merely natural. Now, come on. Use those wolf instincts of yours and let's make something of tonight!"
"Out here? But won't someone see us?"
"Everyone's asleep." She said whispering onto his face. "Come on, Kodi!" Dusty spoke as a whining child that wanted her way. "I know you want to do this as much as I do! I want you to make love to me! We may never get this chance again!"
"It'll be a first for both of us," Kodi thought about this long and hard. "Are you sure this is what you want to do?"
"Mmm." she kissed him again. Then she stood up, backed up and leapt onto the hybrid, pinning him to the ground; their bodies were on top of each other. "Does that give you an answer?"
"Hmm, I think this seals it." Kodi moved his nose closer to her cheek and licked her passionately. They both smiled and Dusty let out a loving giggle as they then moved off of each other and roamed the shoreline near Nome, rolled in the grass, sand, and water, just like two young pups playing in the prime of their youth.
Then several times during the night, either in the lake, on the grass or huddled in the Alaskan shoreline of sand, Kodi stood over top of the gray female, settling his rear on top of her own. He grabbed a tuft of her neck hair with his teeth and bit hard as she quietly yelped in ecstasy. Her face grew red as she could feel him deep within her. She felt the pain and endured it as he thrusted in and out of her rapidly until he stayed inside for a short period of time, causing Dusty to let out a long howl of pain, and yet at the same time, it was pleasure. Their breathing sped up, their hearts raced in unison, and for once, they had become a true unit. After he had reached his climax, they came apart from each other and both howled at the moon, releasing the emotions of their love to the moon and the stars that had witnessed their submission to each other. Although it was painful to endure, they both wanted more . . . much more. They continued their eternal dance in the summer moon's presence throughout the night, until they collapsed on the ground, powerless for the remainder of the night. The moon began to set, ending the mating ritual as the two active lovers stretched on the grass, sleeping as the orange sunlight rose in the east over the lake where they had intertwined their love to one another only a couple of hours ago.
I love you . . . I love you . . . Oh, Kodi, I love you . . . .
And I love you, Dusty . . . . my beautiful silver angel . . . I love you too . . . .
As they dozed on the plain between the lake and Nome, tears fell down Dusty's bluish-gray eyes while she slept; they were tears of pain she felt as if her moonlight lover was still within her, tears of their passionate love that they had, and tears of joy. Little did she know, but an almost black shadow had been watching them the entire time from a nearby building, also in tears.
"How could you do this?" was all he could muster through his teeth, tightly closed. Tears fell from his eyes and he ran the opposite direction, now knowing that he was being betrayed by the one who he thought had loved him.

=====================================
Part THREE
I was freed from this purity that I had had for so long. He released my true passion and we grew up that night, with the moon above lighting our way to a pleasurous paradise.
But . . . . now I was tainted . . . . dirty . . . and exiled . . . .
And about to lose everything I ever cherished . . . . .
----------------------
August. The tides begin to turn . . . . .
It was early within her pregnancy when some of the other huskies could tell that Dusty was going to be a mother. She had starting to eat more than her share of dog kibble. She would wake up feeling agitated and groggy, after not being able to get a decent night's sleep. Mr. Simpson got worried one morning when he saw her almost collapse onto the ground; he knew something wasn't right with her. He led her to the doctor's office and had her examined thoroughly.
"Well, Mr. Simpson, I have some good news and some bad news for you. The good news is that Dusty is pregnant with puppies." The doctor spoke while he used his stethoscope to listen to the pitter-pattering of the new heartbeats of life that were now growing within the husky's uterus. "It seems she's been this way for the past couple of weeks, and the pups sound like they'll be growing strong."
"Doc, that's great news! She had been acting strangely ever since near the end of July." He patted the gray husky happily, excited to know that she was bound to whelp strong sled dogs like herself. "So this is what you've been doing over your summer break, eh Dusty?" he let out a light chuckle before turning back towards the white-coated doctor. "So, what is the bad news?"
The doctor took off his stethoscope and placed it on a nearby table. "The bad news is that because of this, she might not be strong enough to pull a sled if she's been collapsing so much. She needs plenty of rest and food to keep herself and her new arrivals healthy. This is what's best for her right now: no sledding until after a month or so after she gives birth."
The musher let out a sigh. "Okay then." He turned to the dog on the examining table and rubbed her belly. "I'm sorry, girl," he soothed the maturing gray husky. "But it's the doctor's orders. I can't have something happen to you while we're on a run. No mail team for you this season or this winter. You should stay inside the boiler room for now and rest. You have to take it easy now, Dusty; you have to be ready to grow up into a mother." He smiled at the thought of Dusty's pups being just like her. "I promise I'll feed you when we get back from our route, okay?" He then turned to the doctor. "Thank you, Doc."
"No problem, Mr. Simpson." he answered back. "Just bring her back for regular examinations every couple of weeks during her pregnancy, and I'll make sure that she has a safe and smooth delivery in at least a couple of months from now."
Dusty whined sadly, nuzzling against her musher's other arm as he petted her. He nodded back at the doctor, and he lifted the husky off of the table and led her out of the doctor's office.
The rest of the team ran over to the light-silver husky, eager to know whether she was okay. Everyone was glad when the announcement was made.
"Everyone, I have news!" She announced to her team. "I'm going to have puppies soon."
"Oh my goodness! Congratulations, Dusty! We wish you well!" Huskies from the team congratulated her happily.
"Thank you all! But because of my condition, I won't be part of the mail team this season, but I do wish all of you the best of luck!"
Again, all of the dogs cheered, even though they were saddened by the fact that the female gray wouldn't be assisting the team, they all knew it was best for her sake. All the canines had hopeful grins on their faces, proud that at last, Dusty was to become a great mother.
All but one.
Ralph stood outside of the crowd of dogs, silently filled with rage. His frown spoke books to the silver husky when she turned her head towards him and then looked away.
"So, what do you think about that, Ralph?" one of the sled dogs asked him. Dusty let out a light gasp that was barely heard in all of the commotion. "She is bearing your pups, right?" Dusty then gulped.
"Hmph." Ralph growled. "She will bear no pups of mine, that little cheating *****."
Everyone gasped in shock as muttering voices spread through the crowd of dogs.
Oh no . . . Dusty thought to herself.
Why would he say such a thing? Unless . . . She let out a light gasp.
***** . . . does he know about me and Kodi making love that night? No . . . he wouldn't know that. I could have sworn that everyone was asleep!
"Why would you say such a thing about your true love?" An orange husky spoke up.
"Yeah!" Another one beside the previous speaker followed. "Dusty is a loyal husky! She wouldn't -" He was then interrupted by Dusty herself.
"Ralph . . . . I'm sure you're joking! You don't know what you're talking about!" She stood strongly in front of the large mass of dark gray dog, although inside, she was frightened for her life.
"Yes, I do . . . and you know it too! Don't bother to deny it!" the bulky dog spoke with a hurtful, angry tone. "I went outside for some fresh air, and came back in with the urge to vomit. I couldn't believe what I saw: you and . . . . and that half-breed of a husky . . .” He pointed towards a slowly approaching Kodi when he said that. “. . . doing what we were planning to do in our future! And you were happy with him, kissing him, playing and flirting with him . . . You wanted him all of this time, right? All this time you wanted to have sex with him!"
Again, everyone let out a gasp. Especially Kodi, who had just arrived at the scene, and was surprised to hear everything that Ralph had said about his love.
"Leave her alone, Ralph!" Kodi jumped between the quarrelling former lovers. "Look, I have no idea what's going on, but I . . . . I never thought that there was something more to this!" He then looked at the newly pregnant husky with his worried dark hazel eyes, whispering to her. "Please tell me the truth, Dusty: Did you just make love to me because you didn't want to be with Ralph or was there something else? Did you really love me or him?"
"She has no right to speak to you! Especially for what she did!" More voices barked out in anger of the situation. "She is a *****, a ****! She cheated on her lover! Such a shame."
"SILENCE!" A booming voice of a brown husky on the stairs sent a hush throughout the canine crowd. "Now, let her speak. It is only right for every dog to tell their side of the story. It is the law, you know."
Of course it is, Kirby, because you were the one who became the high-law dog of Nome. She thought to herself. Dusty nodded to Kirby, who silenced the crowd, and then began to cry.
"I'm sorry, I really am. I was afraid this would happen, but I guess my heart was in control of my actions at the time. It's time that everyone knows the truth." She turned to Kodi, nuzzling him. "I really do love you, but last fall, before you joined us, I fell in love with Ralph and we vowed to each other that no one else would come between us. We had become betrothed that fall, hoping that one day we would start a family of our own when the time was right. But then, I was introduced to you and assigned to train you to become the best mail dog that you could be. Yet . . . while we were training, I started to fall in love with you in secret. Only when you called me 'beautiful' out there in the summer moonlight I was sure that you were the one I was truly meant to be with." Tears fell like a broken dam that was overflowing. She then turned to the darker-colored dog, bowing down as low as she could. "Please, please, Ralph, forgive me for my actions. . . . I have failed your love . . . and our promise. I still love you . . . but only as a friend. I'm sorry to put you through all of this . . . ."
Ralph's paw slapped her on the face, causing her to hit the ground hard and roll on the dirty pavement. "Hmph. I have no forgiveness for you, Dusty. You will get what you deserve, you sneaky ****."
Other dogs continued to speak in outrage for either side of the argument. Dusty's body remained on the ground, motionless and still with rivers of salty tears streaming down her face. "I'm sorry . . . I'm sorry . . ." was all she could mutter as she passed out in the middle of the street.
Kirby looked around and knew this situation had to be settled elsewhere, where the humans would not suspect anything going on among the local huskies.
"It's not safe right now for us to argue about this right now. Besides, it's time for our mail team to get ready for today's run. We shall hold a discussion on what to do in this situation tonight inside the boiler room. Every dog in town should make sure to be in attendance, so spread the news around town." The light walnut dog then tried to assist Dusty to her feet. Kodi also tried to approach the brown and gray dogs but Kirby growled at him,
"But . . . but I just want to help her, Kirby . . ." Kodi pleaded, but to no avail.
"Get away from her, Kodiak," Ralph also began to growl angrily, still upset that one of his own friends would even think about stealing his love away from his clutches. "Haven't you done enough to her already? You seduced her!" He began to bark and growl louder as Kodi continued to come closer. "Don't make me kill you right now! Get away from that **** *****!"
"Do what he says, Kodi." Kirby commanded quietly, causing the burgundy dog suddenly to halt. "Leave this instant and wait for us at the sled. We'll be along shortly."
"But --!"
"No buts!" The leader growled in the mutt's face. "Just do it if you want what's best for your little lady . . . or should I call her . . . a tramp!"
Kodi couldn't take this anymore, but he hung his head in defeat and walked away from the scene. Ralph huffed and followed Kodi with a large distance in between them. Kirby, with the assistance of a couple of non-mail dogs, were able to move a pregnant Dusty into the boiler room, where she could get rested and prepared for the night's canine town meeting.
The team finally got together about thirty minutes later and was on their way to White Mountain. Dusty was still passed out in the boiler room, with dried up tears on her cheeks. Kodi, who was too upset by all of the drama that came up that morning - hearing Dusty was pregnant with his children, knowing the truth that Dusty and Ralph were originally an item, and seeing everyone turn their back on her - he couldn't bear to run the route today.
I can’t believe this! Kodi thought as he sat by himself at a window that looked into the boiler room, revealing a sleeping Dusty.
How could everyone on the team just turn on her like that? It’s not her fault that things happened the way it did! It’s mine as much as hers – I never knew that she and Ralph were together – not even when we were all running by Dad’s house on the shoreline! He let out a long, quiet sigh.
If only she had told me before, none of this would have happened.
But . . . . Kodi’s hazel eyes closed shut as a tear swelled down his face.
I still love her. I fell in love with her when she was falling in love with me . . . And now we are forever connected by that red thread of fate . . . ever since she first laid her eyes on me on my first day on the mail team, ever since she and I ran side by side on the beach, ever since I saw her body glitter in the moonlight and laid with her . . . . we were meant for each other. He opened his eyes and saw the pregnant husky begin to stir on the blanket that she was laying on.
I swear on my life, Dusty, I will be here to protect you. But I only wish I knew what I can do for you . . .
He desperately needed to talk to someone that instant, someone for advice on this type of situation.
His Mom and Dad.
"Mom? Dad?" He called into the barn, where he hoped his parents were dozing. He was right - they were sleeping on a bale of hay, his burgundy and white husky mother was lying on the bottom with his brownish-gray hybrid father's head on Jenna's back and neck. "Mom? Dad? Wake up!" Kodi called again, this time nudging them awake.
“Kodi . . . Kodi?” Jenna woke up, surprised to see him with them. “What are you doing here? You should be with the mail team on their way to White Mountain!”
“Well . . . . I doubt I’ll ever be on the team again anytime soon, Mom.” Kodi told her, his head lowered and his eyes were almost at the verge of crying.
“What the matter, son?” Balto concernedly asked. “You know you can tell us.”
It seems they weren’t up to hear about the commotion earlier. Great . . . . Kodi groaned to himself.
Now, I have to tell them . . . .
“Well, I’m kinda, sorta . . . .” he began to blush when he paused; he still had that night that. “I’m going to be a father soon, but –“
Kodi was interrupted by his ecstatic parents. “Oh my goodness! Congratulations, Kodi!” Jenna nuzzled her son proudly, excited by the news.
“Yes, this is great news! We have both been awaiting this day for so long!” His wolf-dog father gave him a hug with one of his paws. “So, who’s the lucky mate, Kodi?”
Kodi felt nervous as his face got even more flushed. “It’s . . . one of my best friends, Dusty.”
Both mother and father gasped. “Dusty? But Kodi, isn’t she already betrothed to another husky already?” Jenna asked. It seemed that she had been keeping up with the local gossip.
“How did you . . .” Kodi began to ask until he saw the sneaky smirk on his mother’s face “Oh, never mind. Yes, I knew – ever since this morning when I found out everything.” The burgundy pup let out a sigh. “But by that time, it was already too late. We had done the deed, and Ralph saw us in the act without us knowing. Now there’s going to be a trial-like town meeting tonight to discuss her fate.” A tear sparkled in his eyes. “Mom, Dad, I’m scared for her. They can’t do anything too harsh to her, can they? I mean, she’s in a delicate condition! Can’t they stop this?”
“I’m afraid they can’t stop this from happening, Kodi,” Balto told him. “The laws will have to prevail over this, and there’s nothing any of us can do about it.”
“But Dad!” Kodi whined. “It’s not fair!”
“Oh, Kodi,” Jenna tried to calm her son down. “I know it’s not fair, but whatever happens, it is the law’s will.”
The frustrated husky-mix huffed. “Then I’ll protect her from the law!”
“That won’t solve anything, son.” The grizzly hybrid stretched his legs as he spoke. “That’s just a silly reaction that will only get her, as well as you, in bigger trouble for defying the law of Nome!”
“Your father’s right, Kodiak,” Jenna added as their son paced back and forth in a fit of silent rage. “Don’t try to be a hero for such a pointless cause like this. You know better than that.”
Now he had had enough of this talk.
“Stop it . . . . stop it . . . . PLEASE STOP IT, DAMMIT!”
“K-k-kodi! That language!” Jenna was shocked by her son’s use of words.
“Sorry, Mom, but I just want this to stop.” He looked at them both with fiery eyes of determination, causing them to be hushed silent. “I don’t care about the law anymore! I love Dusty, and it’s just not fair!” He ran out of the door, tears in his eyes.
“I guess he’s been growing up ever since the bush plane incident,” Jenna looked at her mate, feeling quite concerned. “Could love have caused this sudden change in him?”
“Well, this has happened before with two of our other children,” Balto reminded her of the situation with Dingo and Saba, who after a couple of years of friendly gestures finally did the deed and started a family of their own, even though they were brother and sister.
“But they were finally accepted into society, even though their pups were the offspring of incest.” The beautiful husky looked her lover in the eyes. “Kodi’s situation is much different than theirs. It’s strange, like adultery on Dusty’s part . . . Oh, Balto, what can we do for our son?”
“I’m afraid there’s nothing we can do for him,” Balto sighed. “He’s going to have to take the hard truth on his own.”
The two nuzzled each other, both happy and sad for their young Kodiak. They wished they could do more for him at a time like this, but he was still growing up. Both Kodi and Dusty now had to deal with the consequences of their love on their own.

Was it all a mistake? I still want you, yet I love another who truly loves me in return . . . .
Her voice resounded inside her mind as she began her labor. Her breathing quickened as her rear muscles began to expand and contract, ready to birth a pup. She crawled with her forelegs to the nearest blanket, which was a few feet away. Every time she moved, she released a groan as a trickle of clear fluid came out of her cervix, forming a thin path behind her. She knew it was almost time, but she had to get to a safe haven and a comfortable position to give birth.
I'm so sorry, Ralph . . . I hoping that this wouldn't happen . . . . unless I was sure they would be yours . . . .
She had reached the blanket, unable to last much longer. The pain burned between her hind legs, where in a matter of minutes, new life was about to begin. She made herself comfortable on the blanket, lying on her side; her belly swelling up and down as she breathed. She had to push. One of her hind legs lifted slightly into the air as she let out a small moaning howl. Her cervix continued to pulsate as she released her birthing cries until . . . a small bubble-like thing began to crown from the opening. A second push caused the dark sac to emerge from her tail-end, shining underneath the dimly-lit lantern above them and the burning warmth of the boiler's flames. Tears fell from her eyes while she let out a large push and a groaning cry, at last delivering the puppy, now wet in fluid from the womb that it had called its home for the past two months that she had endured alone.
Please forget about me . . . . I love you, but I betrayed your trust . . . .
Ralph, please forgive me . . . .
