Sorry I wasn't specifically referring to your comment - more just a general statement. I see where you are coming from but I disagree, art is individual to everyone so one size doesn't fit all. Being kept within the confines of reality is in my opinion boring and you may as well take a photo instead of painting (I do take photos and enjoy that as well). People are welcome to express their opinions on the critical aspects and that is OK by me but likewise people should not be surprised if others then offer the same constructive feedback of said opinions.
I understand and respect that, Ac. You know I respect your opinions. But let's cut to the chase here, in answer to the last sentence of this particular quoted part--what would be fair to everyone is that those who like the stuff can say so and have every right to compliment it and speak on it. Conversely, those who may not like some aspect of the art (or the entirety of one or more pieces themselves) may also say so, and has every right to. Neither should be molested about it, castigated for it, or have a finger wagged at them for stating their views. That was my entire point in responding to you. Your first post included the statement
"art is about capturing the spirit of the subject so not necessarily about obeying the laws of physics." Others may interpret what you said differently than I, but I took it as a finger-wag at those who were offering critical opinions. Of course, I'm a bit sensitive to this, because of the way some of us have been repeatedly attacked for doing this same thing on individual art and image submissions over on Balto Source...and have been horribly and wrongly characterized as trolls and flame-baiters...by the white knights I mentioned in my response to you. I will explain in more detail below, since you wanted clarification of what a "white knight" is.
I hope you know that I am not inferring that you have attacked me...but the method of white knights on here (usually the teens and very young adults) is, in fact, to attack.
Still, I don't think anyone is expecting art to be "photo-realistic" (
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Photorealism), but it is hardly unreasonable for someone to expect art to demonstrate certain qualities and consistency. One plus one equals two. It does not equal
one. In a piece of art where there is a strong wind (drawing on the example I spoke about in my first posting), it is expected that the artist is going to follow the conventions of real-world physical laws. The fur is not simply going to be randomly tossed about or "scaled" (as Troll Berserker and I were talking about). It's gonna flow in practically one direction. As it did in the
Balto movie, in the scene pictured in that drawing in the opening post.

I don't understand what you mean by Whiteknights?
I had to learn what this was too when I first saw it used here. And it's been used a LOT here lately. As far as I knew, a "white knight" was just that...a good and pure knight of Medieval and Renaissance Europe. Not some stupid internet thing. But it has become that. It's an internet trope...colloquial slang referring to someone who defends another person in an online social network or, as in the case of Animation Source, a fan site. They spark a pathetic string of drama, argument and flame-baiting in an attempt to smack down anyone who criticizes or speaks remonstratively against, say, a fan artist who submits a very poor piece of work. Or, as noted here:
http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=White%20Knight&defid=5511399...or this:
http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=White%20Knight&defid=5669717.
In the case of Animation Source, I don't know that I agree with the Urban Dictionary's entries completely where they state that the white knight is hoping to gain something from them by defending them. Usually it's simply about getting at the person they are attacking with their defensive behavior. Or getting several people to gang up on that person.
That's how it usually works here (it's even been done by staff members...mostly past ones). I suppose, in that respect, those white knights ARE trying to gain a favor...but only in as much as that favor is to get others to gang up on the person they are attacking...because, generally, they have some pre-existing issues with them. Silly? Yes.
Immature? You'd better believe it. But it's Animation Source (and, to a larger extent, the animation fan community). What else might anyone expect?
