I go for the prequel idea. It would be new, refreshing, and not a waste like telling another crappy story of Balto and Jenna's kids. After Wolf Quest and Wings of Change, who wants to go there with the others.

I don't know if a prequel is a good idea for the series. I still think getting balto's kids in the series.

If you read mine or anyone else's ideas for a series, you'd think differently. The point of having a Balto series is so its about Balto, not his stupid ugly children.

For a series I agree, a prequel would have a number of possibilities, although I am not inclined to rule out sequels wholesale.

All the grammar errors in this topic make my head hurt. Can I just say 'this' and leave? Right, then

You would get the most out of this series if it were a prequel set-up, with the main Balto cast as younger versions of themselves.

You could have Balto, the namesake AND the star, so why wouldn't it be about him mostly? You'll have a young wolfdog pup Balto being new to Nome and being the audience surrogate, so that we learn about the city, historically and how things are seen by the dogs living there.

We'll have Jenna, Balto's crush of course being the prettiest husky in town, but she would provide more to the audience this time, by showing how special Rosie is to her, and go into more detail about their relationship.

Then we'll have a young cocky-as-ever Steele pup. Only he's Balto's best friend. What a twist! It would give Balto more reason for coming into town other than to just see the people and observe races. It can also show that sometimes friendships go astray, and of course we'll find out why.

Then we of course can show our young Nikki, Kaltag, and Star, and even pay some attention to Doc, give more mention to Balto's father, maybe have him come to town on a different team from a city far away. Heck, we could even show the parents' of other characters to show different story archs for them. Jenna having a loving understanding family, and Steele having a rather deadbeat dad, but him having a really close connection to his mother.

Even a younger Boris would be interesting. Heck maybe he's a risk-taker in his prime. It'd be awesome to see. Plus we wouldn't have to see Stella.

Even introduce some other new characters, like a reindeer, or a fox, or a coyote.

Much more interesting than following Balto's boring pups everywhere, since Aleu has no reason to return, and Kodi is hardly worth having a movie about let alone an entire series. And then you'd have four other stereotypes to fill in by his other pups, and you'd get practically no time with Balto himself or anyone else who caused you to like this trilogy in the first place.

A prequel series would be the best way to go.

This. ^

(Oh and just a note: I myself wouldn't give two armadillos about a Balto series if I was assigned to make one, but I rather like this post. Cat knows what she's talking about too. Just sayin'.)

There are a number of people who find fault with Balto's kids, their depiction, even their existence. I can personally find much bigger flaws in each sequel, but at least in Aleu's case there were one or two mannerisms that probably didn't help.

Yes, Aleu's the big one. I actually don't mind Kodi as much but the point is, (and I think Cat or someone already said it at least ONCE in this topic) that the movie titles all start with "BALTO". Not "pups of". It's supposed the be about Balto's story. If you keep too much focus on the pups then they'll focus on the grandpups then the great-grandpups then only God knows where that will end. My point being, the first movie was based on a true story that had a body count for heaven's sake. The more sequels that come out the more I feel people forget that and the more I think the Balto movies look more like a joke at best. That's why I'm glad no more are being made.

I would do something with Balto's past. A month or two ago I thought of this idea for a series and actually started writing a screenplay. Its like three-fourths done and at the bottom of some drawer. Basically, the series would be involving the history of the ship that is Balto's home. These wpuld be a couple years later with the girl Rosy being in her late teens. I had thought what if a young man called Msrk Wainwright came to Nome in search of his past? The young man could be an orphan who is now old enough to be on his own. So he works his way up to Nome with nothing except a backpack, a young Husky dog by the name of Denali, and an old photo of his father and two sailors on a ship, the "Henry W." On the back of the photo is a caption: "Nome-- 1906. Garrett Wainwright Arrives Home."

I was going to have this romance thing going on between Rosy and Mark, as well as Rosy's dog falling in love with Mark's dog, Denali. The point being that the two fall in love with one another as Mark endeavors to find out about his father, Garrett Wainwright. As he does so, he meets Balto and the cast from the movies. Eventually his search leads him to the wrecked ship, which only bygone tales say it shipwrecked there many years ago.

And that's where my screenplay unfortunately stopped. I had school so I couldn't finish it but I intend to now. I was going to have this tragic love story surrounding what had happened to the ship that would lead it to be shipwrecked outside of Nome. Also, Balto's dad would be in the story. In other words, if Mark Wainwright finds out what happened to the ship and to his presumed dead father, he would also find out what happened to Balto's dad. So their pasts are connected.

Then again, it was a crazy idea but I had to write it because it sounded intriguing.

I too, like most, find myself looking into the past. That a prequel would be the way to go. The unanswered question of Balto's earliest days...of his unknown father (and whether or not he worked on a sled team). Of the incident that took his mother's life. Of the question of whether or not there is some connection of Aniu to Nava's pack. Of whether or not Balto himself had any siblings and what became of them. And just how Rosy came to know of Balto (and whether or not, in terms of the fictional Balto movie settings, she named him, gained his trust, and looked after him from time to time by handing him scraps of food or filling his water bowl or some such thing).

...Of how a wolf dog puppy ended up in the care of a snow goose with a Russian accent.

All of these things would make for an interesting story worth telling.

As an afterthought, I don't think Balto's offspring themselves ruined two sequels. I think bad writing and production decisions did that...more so in Wolf Quest than Wings of Change. And leaving two other pups without names or gender identities. Or any of them without more to do in the existing sequels. Sure, in theory, it would be nice to know more about them and what became of them, but there is this question of Balto's past which hangs over the first movie and its sequels begging for resolution. That would be the sensible angle to take. As most fans seem to feel.

True, there is the drawback of sequels masking the original point of the story. Of course the same difficulty could easily arise with prequels.

^ True, but at least a prequel would still star Balto himself. And maybe when the series (or movie) came to the end, it would foreshadow the sickness coming. I could see that and it'd tie up things nicely and kinda mind-blow the audience into thinking, "oh yea, something bad happens where Balto comes to the rescue, that's why his story's important". Again I can't see either a movie or series happening with this, but it would make a nice fan fic...
