Ever The Dreamer wrote: There's really no point in having a fansite if there's nobody there to be a fan. Fan =/= supporting member. What I mean to say is that it doesn't matter how many fans a movie has if people aren't going to make images, fanchars, fanfics, etc. For example, I'm a huge fan of Mythbusters. But I wouldn't participate on a Mythbusters Source because I have no motivation to do things like fanfics, etc. (This assuming it would be possible/practical to do so.) I understand what you're getting at, but fan doesn't always mean "contributor". Taking a look at Balto Source, for example. There are SO many fans of Balto on there that never contribute a thing. They can support though, whether it be by talking in the shout box, sharing the site to other fans, or just being all-around positive. --- I do also see how "hoarding" the sites definitely looks like it. In fact, that post actually really made me stop and think and had me in between both sides for quite a bit. But instead of me thinking "Okay.. true. Delete all the excess sources!" I questioned things. My question is: what about the sources that are being made in progress? Do we stop the flooding of suggestions from coming in and delete the sites-in-progress? Do we just keep a few sources and don't allow newer sources to be made? Because really, if we take that route and then make a new popular source along the way we will have a flood of suggestions coming in yet again. I can see that happening, anyway. We are also stuck in the usual "rant board- all talk nothing happens" situation too. Even though there's no way to fix this, that is true. For all we know nothing will change.. No extra mods will be made and no sources will be deleted. Where's our Webmaster when we need him most, and why did he run off? (rhetorical question, we all know why) Sad that this happened, but it does leave us in this sticky situation.

Quote: I've seen PLENTY of fansites out there that probably get a hundred visitors a day. Many, fewer. But they are TREMENDOUS sites and only lack a higher-up position on Google. They can even be small, nothing more than a few paragraphs and some crude graphics, and don't get that many visitors - let alone contributors. But that's not what makes them a fansite; they are fansites because they are run by fans. A lot of these sites are probably dead sites too, like these sites for example: http://www.lionking.org/~silver/balto/index.htmlhttp://www.lionking.org/~kaltag/Theses sites have since lived out their days as an active fan site, but I do believe these sites are exception in keeping them around. True, they aren't apart of Animation Source, but they ARE old sites. Sites that I would consider to be historical if you want to call them that. These sites are apart of Balto fan site history, they have a right to remain. Unless the owner of the site removes it, or like a lot of the old sites, the server no longer exists. But these new sites that exist on Animation Source have no value to them what-so-ever. Yes, they may be produced by "fans", but that still isn't a reason to keep them around. A lot of these sites that are created are often sites a small handful of members want because this is a movie or series they like. After the site is completed and opened, the site dies just as quickly as it was opened. That has ALWAYS been the case, and it always will be. I personally think that these sites would be far more successful if they were independent from one another. I'm not suggesting anything, but if these sites were to be separate from one another, and managed by different people other than Steet, the admin/owner of the site could have far more control over its activity, rank, etc. Therefore, a more successful site. But when it comes to these sites being on Animation Source, I have to strongly believe that the member's main interests are wolves and huskies. LKS has survived, but this site has been with us for some time, and it was established when Balto Source was a much smaller site, so it had a better chance. I think that the suggestions need to be put to a stop, and if any of the sites that are in progress that need to be deleted, I think that would be MLP Source. I don't want to get into it and start a hoopla over it, but that site will be nothing but trouble, end of story. I believe there are also other sites in progress that I know will just be a waste of space. I doubt that this source will ever make it, but I heard there is Gummy Bear Source in the making, and a ScoobyDoo Source. These two sites that I know will never make it if they were to be active. ScoobyDoo Source would probably be more active than the Gummy Bear Source. So in conclusion, I think it would be best to delete sites like MLP, ScoobyDoo and Gummy Bear Source. The rest of the sources should be voted on.

Being active is more than just talking in the shout box for a few minutes a day. I see your point, though--I don't contribute a lot except for the occasional fanfic. But I still consider myself a fan of the movie.
I don't see the need to delete all the in-progress Sources--they have potential to be active.
Honestly, I think we should take a vote on whether to remove X Source. I think it's a pretty mutual opinion here that many of the sites are basically dead. (I'll use PATF Source as an example. There was a lot of hype about it when it was released, and that's basically why the Source was created in the first place. But a look at the forum shows it's been nine months since the last post, and I haven't even seen it mentioned outside of AS.) And to prevent trolling, we could compile a list of Sources not to delete, and they wouldn't be voted on. (Balto, TLK, Spirit, ADGTH, Bambi, and Rio would definitely be on this list, as their respective forums seem to be somewhat active.) But sites like CDDS and Mulan Source aren't going anywhere, so members could vote on their removal.

I really like that voting idea, actually. That sounds like it could work.

Besides, who do you know that, even given several minutes, could name off all the Sources from memory? For a week or so after it opened, there was a lot of activity; the shout box there was always active. But now it's fallen into dormancy like almost all the other sites. Regardless of whether it's created by fans or not, regardless of whether it should be independent or not, I've noticed an issue with several of the deader Sources: sites like Balto Source and TLK Source have "What's new today?" toward the bottom. But most of the others have "What's new this month?" They all seem to have either nothing (i.e., PATFS with one image) or a lot (101DS with 62 images, 30-something characters, etc.). Both of these extremes imply that the sites aren't well-managed--and we all know that's the case. They appear to be entirely dead, and they are. So any potential members who would join will leave because there's no activity. Kaizer wrote: Paxis wrote: I really like that voting idea, actually. That sounds like it could work. Pros of having so many sources: Selective fan works <--Can be found or posted elsewhere, in example post a Pongo drawing on balto source since it's a dog, or search for 101S fanwork on dA. Characters related <-- Post them elsewhere, even dA Quality screencaps <--- Many websites already have screencaps, some even better.
Cons: More work for the mods Depressing reminder of how hard the builders worked to have their work just collect dust Easy target for bad characters to get passed the mods Slow activation for images and drawings, as well as other things.
Please just stop with all of the sources. You can even pick a quality movie like HTTYD and turn it into a source but it'll just die.

I wouldn't mind but this website started to give insight and praise to an underrated movie and it just seems like we've sold out to try and overrule every single fan site race for animated films out there. It's beyond stupid and I had a huge facepalm/headdesk combination when I spotted Warriors characters on the Aristocats Source: kids, really!?!? Have you even seen the film? It clearly states at the beginning that it is set in 1900's Paris and Warriors is clearly set in modern times. So how the hell do these two connect? God, I really disliked the Warriors fandom before that but now I hope that series just burns.
But I digress.
I could go into a long tl;dr rant about how Animation Source is a big fat mess with next to little organisation with all of these websites stemming from it but I won't because I think I've said my point of view on two other occasions at least. People have lives, jobs, school and such and you expect a few dozen of them to drop all that and design a website, maintain it and accept hundreds of submissions to it everyday? Just so this webspace can be popular? Which, may I remind you, has never been an issue when we just had The Lion King Source and Balto Source.
Oh, yeah, and maintain the forums.
A good analogy for this website is that it's like a child throwing every single toy he or she possesses into a tiny cupboard and it's slowly building up and becoming more and more cluttered and less organised with things that are no longer needed or are old and broken. Sorry, inactive.
EDIT: Oh, and we have a Tangled Source now? Honestly, I feel sorry for these website builders but this is just going to drop dead in the water. People don't like humans on this website - that much has been established - and we already have a horse-centered source so what do we have left? Oh, chameleons.

Why consider these older sites historical but not the new ones on AS? There all websites none the less. There as you say "dead" so how come the new AS sources are not historical if the old "dead" sites are? It dosen't make much sense. It makes perfect sense... I really shouldn't have to explain this to you, but new things can't really be historical, especially if it ended up being a flop. I mean, yes it existed, but it hasn't left a mark. Older things that have been around for awhile, and actually was active at one point, is what makes it historical.

Quote: Yeah I thought about that. But still you did say you need to let go so let go of the old sites. Your point is exactly? Quote: By the way, your everywhere I go on here. What are you trying to imply? That I stalk you? Because I'm not everywhere you go. And I certainly do not stalk people. Your whole post seemed rather pointless there.
