Toshiko-Sama wrote: It's animated, people. It's not intended to be realistic. So, quit trying to make up realistic reasons for it. Animated =/= unrealistic. In fact, like Sakujo just mentioned, most of the different characters in Balto are quite distinct, breed-wise. Compare Nikki to Star to Doc to Morse to Silvie to Dixie ETC. None of them are using a generic wolf/husky build (and by the way, wolves and huskies have different anatomy, too. -gasp-) This problem has absolutely nothing to do with the movie being animated. Anyways. As far as this topic goes, YES, I agree. -_- As a character creator and analyzer, this is a thing that drives me up the wall. And as has been mentioned before, being young or not a good artist is no excuse. I'm not a fan of using linearts myself, as I personally believe there is a bit more to character build than just the breed, but they're out there for use and there are SEVERAL more breeds available than just BaltoSource's "wolves", "huskies", and, StarClan forbid, "blank renders"...though those are an argument for another day.

My thinking is that we're not going to get anywhere with this Toshiko-Sama, guys. She's been posting irrelevant and contradictory (and even painfully-obvious) things around the forum over the past day or so, and when someone comments in response, she flat out (and rudely) ignores it. Odd. And she's been on and off the forum several times within that period.
Buuuut then, maybe there is a small chance she will actually give us the courtesy of a response at some point soon.

Rebelness wrote: As a husky owner, I bet you all can imagine how much this annoys me. No, they DON'T look exactly like wolves. The anatomy and shapes are actually very different if people took the time to study them - something EVERYONE should do before they start drawing anything. And seriously.. German Shepherds? Are you kidding me? Yeah they got the same very BASIC shape but.. everything else is pretty much totally different. The head shape, the ears and muzzle, the neck, the back, the tail, the legs, the feet... so yes, everything. Comparing huskies to Border Collies is even worse.. we've had our husky with border collies, and again - totally different. Using huskies as a base to draw other dogs is a TERRIBLE idea. Why can't people just stop being lazy, and draw those dogs AS those dogs, and not as totally different breeds from different groups and bloodlines? I agree, using the whole "they're only young!" argument shouldn't be used. It's better to teach these kids how to do it properly and educate them about breeds of different shapes and sizes before they rely on husky bases for the rest of their lives. Oh I totally agree! I own a German Shepherd and used to co own a husky. They are completely different breeds and should not even be considered as the same. The only thing they have in common is that both are "popular" dog breeds that end up in shelters way too often for my liking! I can't stand when someone uses a Husky line art and calls it a GSD. First off GSD's are much longer than a Husky, and the shape of their head is different! Not to mention leg length, ear shape, muzzle length, heck even the tail is different. As an owner I get REALLY ANNOYED if someone says my dog is a husky, and I know Husky AND Border Collie owners who would feel the same. I also can't stand all the Panda German Shepherd characters! It seems like if your character doesn't fit a regular GSD standard, let's call it a Panda! Oh and that way my Panda GSD can win all of the show competitions and be a popular show dog character! Ugh! I liked the look of Panda's when I first saw them, but all the crappy Panda characters have me officially turned off on that color variation of the GSD! Seriously people look up the breed standards on line! Read through the DESCRIPTION OF WHAT THE BREED SHOULD LOOK LIKE! Oh and the excuse that "they're just young kids" is just that AN EXCUSE. I get little kids all the time who know the difference between my German Shepherd and my Husky! It's called the internet or the library! Okay end of rant!

If it looks like a husky, you call it a husky. I don't understand people who go and take a render or a lineart or whatever the heck that's of a totally different breed and call it another one. Honestly, the laziness is incredible... I've taken days before just to find the right lineart for a design I was just working on and planned to make a proper reference later. In other words, no one was going to see it, yet I still cared that it looked like the actual breed. I don't get it. And it doesn't matter how young you are. A six year old can tell the difference between a labrador retriever and a husky, so I don't get why it's not the same when rendering, etc.

Another thing worth to mention, but it's on Lion King source and I foud it being as massive as Huskies in Balto's build. I mean Kovu, Simba, Nuka and Scar have different build and manes. Well, most of people see completely no difference in it, putting their characters into various linearts from different lions...
