I agree with all of this, Creating a special kind of Character source where all the characters go on animation source, that way they don't have to be related to the characters, or related to that movie in anyway. Getting rid of the character page on all the source sites will generate a lot of Drama though, but it still a good idea to create a Character source for all the characters. We have to save the characters yes, Or maybe just transfer the information to that page would be perfectly normal as well too.

Even though my opinion isn't worth alot, considering how little I visit the character section of the site, it'd be worth it to stop the complaining and drama caused by all the sparkle characters, so yes I agree with the idea of making a source for them. I wish I had more of an idea to add to it but, I don't. And just because Draco asked (and the fact it is needed), I'll repost her message:

And lastly, Steet! Can we please, please, PLEASE have a character rule page for the characters section?! You may not realize, but it is desperately needed. All you have to do is create the page, and us mods or site builders can fill it up. Anyone else posting on this topic, please keep mentioning this if you agree!

The character pages on the sites won't be deleted, it will be just for related characters.

^ The same could be said for the questions pages.

WELL, it took me about two hours to finish up, but I've finally managed to delete any and all traces of non-relation to Balto in my fan art, fan images, and characters from all the sites. Now all that's left are the official characters themselves and those of my characters that are highly involved with Balto/know the characters or their relatives (kids, grandkids, etc.) very well. I gotta say, it makes me feel awesome!

steet wrote:
Here is my opinion :

- The difficulty of what is allowed or not is the main problem, as it can't be something really objective. As we've seen previously, having a character being "related" to a Balto character just doesn't work because people cheat.

- On the french side, since about 6 months, the characters must be activated before being on the site, and the moderators are filtering what comes in. It seems to work, but let's not forget that the amount of characters being validated on the french side is not even 1/10 of what's on the english site! Also, more submissions and more mods = conflicts over what should be allowed or not.

- And I remember that when mods had to validate characters on the english side, there were lots and lots of characters in the waiting list, always, no matter how many mods.

Here's what I suggest :

- Making the "Characters Source" site as suggested, and on this site, allow any kind of characters (as long as it respects the no-sex, no-violence rule), and no validation required by the mods.

- But on any other site, the submissions will have to be validated, and mods will filter what comes in.

- Then, I would post a news on the sites to let everyone know about this change, and allow them some time to move their "wrong" characters and art there.

- After that while, mods will be allowed to filter and delete any art/character that doesn't fit a site.

Just tell me your opinion.

As for this...

I believe the character source is in fact a good idea, but I do not, however, agree that the rules should be so lax. All we'll be doing then is moving the chaos of Baltosource (and the other sources too) to another source. It's just spam, spam, and more spam. It would be hard to tell the good characters from the bad ones in the actual CharacterSource, if there were virtually no rules.

I think there should be a guideline for the characters as well, because without any guidelines, that's where the mods' problems lay. With fan art and fan images, there are no problems, because there is a very good set of rules to follow, and if someone doesn't follow a rule, it's obvious. With the character rules the way they are now, there's too much left for individual interpretation.

That leads me to my other agreement, that yes, it'd be a highly good idea to bring back the moderators who are willing to spend time to look through the characters and decide what's good. Also, if there is a chance that sparkle dogs are still allowed (as long as they're source related and as Natti said, not crazy enough to be impossibly incorporated in the universe of said source), whichever mods are chosen to validate should be neutral on the entire subject of sparkle dogs. Otherwise, there will be problems. Though that's just my 2 cents worth.

I agree with the character source, but I also agree that the rules should be more structured with these kinds of characters.

A note: This new source could also not only contain characters, but fan art, fanfics, and images as well. Which makes it a teensy bit more difficult, but I think we could do it.

I think this new source should be somewhat similar to deviant art, but the rules should be more strict.

First of all, or course there would be no violence or gore or anything like that. (That just goes without saying)

Second, there should definitely be character rules, not doubt. They should look complete, with AT LEAST a history, personality, and interests. (probably at least 4-5 lines each or something) And should not look like it was created in 5 seconds.

Third. Fan art and images...pretty much anything could go on this one I guess, as long as they're family friendly stuff.

Fourth. fanfics. They should probably keep the same rules as before.

Fifth. Images. Should we allow blank renders (or any renders for that matter?) My opinion on this is as long as the renders are well put together and not just a colored over screenshot, I'll be fine with them. Blank renders just allow people to color over things, and I don't want that to happen.

This is just what I wanna say for now. But the new source is a very good idea.

I'm pretty much agreeing with everyone else, the site should have some guidelines. And perhaps I think the site should have a separate set of mods as well.

And am for this idea, I like the idea that characters can be actually activated on the actual site, just they must be 'source' related (balto related, spirit related ect...) And they must be strongly related to balto, not 'he met balto one day and they talked' or 'she is alue nephews great aunt' if you understand what I am trying to say.

Something I am against, is that only balto fan art is allowed on the art/image galleries. I still think that as long as it is wolf (for BS) or horse (for SS) ectt... that should be accepted.

yet, I also as others, hesitate. Is it worth the trouble to just take away all these characters? We should just have...more strict rules of what we accept to have as a character. Originality is a big thing lately, something we are starting to lack.

This is just my opinion. We are completely open to opposition ^^

I don't think we're taking away these characters, just moving them. Right? Or do people have to re-create their characters?

Gome, but I doubt whether it would work great. I've gotta one OC related to the Talespin world and no one blamed on me for uploading her. :/

I agree with most of what Steet suggested; the gradual shift certainly makes sense. BUT, I am going to have to disagree on the characters being automatically accepted on the CharacterSource; yes, that would clean up the FanSources, which is fantastic, but they wouldn't do much about the character spam as a whole because people will still be submitting crappy characters.

As far as more mods=confusion on what's allowed, that's why I said to make a clearer, more solid set of rules that everyone understands and/or do what Hecate said here:
Hecatehell wrote:

Yes, it likely will, but honestly, there are going to be some members or others upset no matter what we do, even if we do nothing.

Also, I'd agree with most of Imagine's guidelines. As for her question on renders/blanks in the image section of possible CharacterSource, I personally would say no. Heck, were it up to me, I'd say no linearts, either. But unfortunately for me, it's not. -shrug-

Imagine wrote:

What I think would be best, as I'm quite sure others have said, would be to give the members a warning in advance so that they can save their characters to a computer file or different site, then delete ALL of them and post the new rules. If members still want their character posted, they can re-submit and a mod can check it. That way, mods won't have to search through the bajillion characters we have to deactivate the unnecessary ones when they are so allowed.

I'm gonna have to disagree with you on this. They're called the FANart and FANimage sections for a reason. This is a fansite. Just because you draw a wolf doesn't make it fanart...so what's the point of putting it in a fanart gallery?

Think of it from the perspective of a non-member. They'll come by, see "BaltoSource", and assume it's for Balto. Let's say this person happens to be a fan of Balto, so they come at want to take a look at the fanart. But what's this? These aren't Balto characters! These are random wolves and some unrealistic and/or sparkly characters they've never heard of!

Maybe the image section will be better. But wait! I thought this was a section for Balto graphics! What's with all these repeats of the same art/screenshots colored over as a million different unrelated characters?!

...Yeah. Nothing against you personally, but that's where I stand on that. ^^"

We have think about it on the french side and fine a solution :

- Members have to make at least a fanart/ image about the movie for 4 others.
- And they have to feature EVERY characters on the images ( who have to be activated before with the rule to have a dirrect relation with a character from the movie. And a strong one, not something like " her mother know the best friend of the daughter of the great-grand son of Balto " who is just NOT a relation with the movie ... ). Then they make many images about they characters with the movie's characters.

And it works. Plus we make some games with a fan news where all the pictures made for it are featured ... then they make a lot of fan creations with this ^-^
Plus, they can't make contest without any relation with the movie, then, there is a lot of contest and all of them can be send on the site ( exept if they have to make the family of a character, then to send the creation, they have to make a character page for them before ).

But ... I'm seriously the only one to think that this character source is a really bad idea ? Not cause I don't want Unrelated to go, I'm strongly against it, but cause it's ANIMATION SOURCE and not deviantart for kids who want to make what ever they want on a FAN site and cause it's the open door other site who have no relation with animation movie ( like " Twilight source " or " Super Sparkle unatural fling wulfs " ? ).

this is really a poor solution to me ... I was thinking you would fight till the end ^^'

You're right...it IS AnimationSource. That's exactly why we're discussing the possibilty of a CharacterSource--so that the FanSources can REMAIN FanSources.

I can't say anything about the French side, but here on the English side, we have a TON of members who are just kids--I've seen some as young as 8--and use this site as their own little dA since they're either not old enough or not allowed to get accounts on other websites. They want to be recognized and to have somewhere to put their creations and show them off to the world, and they do that here.

The purpose of this CharacterSource is to keep all that OUT of the FanSources. No, AnimationSource is not dA. That much is true. But at least on this side of the site, people treat it like it is, and if we could concentrate all that on one Source made for that purpose rather than spreading it to where it doesn't belong, I think that would help the overall site.

I pretty sure we had the 1 in 4 rule on this side for a period of time, but some of the members, desperate to post something of their own characters, got around it by sending half-hearted doodles or linearts colored as official characters.

As for the character features, I think that's a great idea, but only if the characters are either official characters or checked fancharacters...which you said it is over there, which is great, but here, characters are automatically accepted, so until and if that changes, people can just continue to make pages for their crappy characters and use that as the feature...which is part of the problem.

So that's the reason for the CharacterSource--give the members somewhere to put it, keep the unrelated stuff contained in just one Source, and therefore keep the FanSources for fan works and make AnimationSource overall "cleaner", if you will.

Most of our members are less than 13 years old ... And we have 8 years members too, they just have no choice.

About the characters, you're right, but as I see, many of you ask for the return by the mods, so this can works.

For the 1/5 related image/fanart : it we, mods, who look on the members gallery and say " you don't have enough image about the movie, you've to make X related pic about it to continue ".

I think you do understand what I mean ... Animation source is not a place for a " character source " !! Like I said in my first message here : There is deviantart, furafinity, imageshack, photobecket, blogs, many forum about art and the animation forum for this ... I don't see why there should be an animation source for something who is not animation movie cause members don't get the point this is not " canine source " but " Balto source " ... This is just stupid !!
