Yeah, it's like people don't even read character profile and want to make mates just because they find a character design cool. Making mates is like some form of "claiming" someone else's character... I always have to write in my character profiles that mates are closed...

You got my point here...

Great topic to rant about! I agree! I have enough troubles using the 4 characters I have (I'm even thinking about deleting one or two). How could someone possibly use ALL 60 some characters? I've even seen a person, don't remember who, but they had over 90 characters!

I too think people are just doing it for fame :/ But really what makes you fame on a site like this, is if you make good quality art/chars and get out and talk to people! My popularity on this site is zero. And you don't see me making a bazillion characters!

Something that really bugs me about the characters, is when they only have a two sentence bio or when there's nothing at all for a bio. I admit, my char's bios are on the short side. But at least it's better than nothing.

I really do wish that there was a character Mod again! The site's been flooded with bad quality characters (including my own)
If I could, I'd gladly be a char Mod. But I know I could never do it. I'm too shy to talk to people and I'd feel bad for deleting peoples stuff.
Steet should really assign someone to be character Mod again. The site desperately needs it. At least in my own opinion. T-T

Technically, all the mods have those responsibilities.

It has been stated on this thread before, but for those that didn't notice, characters get uploaded automatically. Gone are the days of them being screened before-hand. We can just respond to them after they appear activated. So the problem isn't so much a lack of moderation, it's in how they characters are activated in the first place(in terms of quality of the characters).

I should think if characters had to to be validated again, it could possibly discourage people from making characters all the time, especially if the no sparkle dog rule was set back into place.

And yes, people, please read these posts carefully, I actually stated in my very first post that characters are automatically sent onto the site.

Uhh, wouldn't that be a good thing? XD, sort of, I mean. Reiterating what I said before, too many get sent on daily for the staff to be able to check, but if less characters were sent daily because the rule was reinstated, then maybe we wouldn't have that problem.

I can't speak for other mods, but usually I don't see too many "sparkle" characters. And I don't know about the other mods, but I don't search through tons of pages for characters breaking rules, mostly because of how impractical that would be considering how many there are. So it's easier to just go for the ones that get reported to us.

Well, the topic isn't primarily about sparkle dogs. It's like "why so many?" Before the people starting eating skittles and crapping rainbows onto their art page or computer screen, we were still concerned about bad characters, but those were the kind that were carbon copies of Balto or stuff like that. The phrase "quality over quantity" comes to mind here.

Impractical it would be indeed to search for characters breaking the rules, the character rules are so loose now anyway. Balto source could be renamed OC source or Roleplay source. I don't think the other sources have followed suit yet, but those are either not that active or just opened.

Which actually brings up another question to mind. A lot of people spend time on more than one source because they like more than one movie duh XD, are we just counting BS characters? Or the lions, birds, dragons, cats, monkies, and whatever the heck else lives on God's green earth? There's 21 sources. If you decided to have at least character on every source, that's 21 characters, again, not that there's anything wrong with that if you're using them. I'm not even saying everyone does, but it's still a possibility. And a colossal amount of storage space.

How could you use all those? 60 characters on one, but think about if you added all the others, my goodness.

Twenty-one? I only see nineteen on the English side...which I am sure is what we're primarily talking about here.

Nevertheless, unless I am mistaken a member's characters posted on one source don't show on the other source pages. For instance, the characters they might submit on Balto Source will be shown in a list on their profile when it is opened on Balto Source, but any characters they may have submitted, say, on Lion King Source, won't show on their Balto Source list. But there ARE members who have submitted, like, well over twenty characters just on one source (some FAR more than that)! That's rather ridiculous.

Mmmm, if I miscounted forgive me, but there definitely are several new sources coming out that would push us over the 20 mark if we haven't reached it already. And yes, I noticed that also. Which is actually what gave me that thought. And I really have nothing against those members in particular, I've talked with some of them before and they're nice people. But it doesn't change the fact like you said that it's rather ridiculous.

I have well over thirty characters and I've worked hard developing each of them. I role-play them, draw them, write about them. Nobody gets left out, so I can understand how someone could have so many and take care of them. It is possible.

However, I am all for the limit. It upsets me to see people making as many (poorly developed) characters as they can just to breed them and wind up with more. I especially hate when pretty much all of their 30+ characters only have one picture of them and it's a colored line art or blank render. No matter what level their drawing skills are at, I always respect someone more when they draw their characters themselves.

For anyone who's opposed: Having the limit doesn't necessarily mean you can only have 20 or so characters. Just submit your favorite characters or the ones you think you did the best creating. Send ones in that you're proud of. You don't have to have a character page to be able to draw a character and send it into your gallery. The main thing the limit will do is discourage people who, essentially, hoard their characters for popularity and clean up the character section. You can still keep your characters, some just might not have a page.

I'm personally against the idea of characters altogether. There's really no reason for them (except official characters), except as ways for people to look up their favorite character and see what they've been featured in. Other than that, they're almost all used for "breeding", sparklies, and other such stuff that the site just wasn't made to use.

However, as it is impractical, I am all for the limit.

I will point out, back last summer, there WAS a limit enstated for characters. Guess what? EVERYONE complained, except two or three people. The limit was at first 10, then raised to 15. These guys REALLY thought 15 characters is too few to have.

I don't recall where there was ever a limit, it must of been a mod made rule that no one knew about. I never saw kids throwing a fit either. Whether or not, the lid needs to be put back on top of these characters now, they have had their fun. I know you can't always make everyone happy, but this site is being over run by kids who make characters as if they're a factory, and I'm sure that's abuse of what the page's purpose was intended to be. This site is starting to look like China's population, no offense. The character population is out of control, and that is something needs to be taken care of.

I'm probably being too realistic about this, but these kids need to take a trip to their local animal shelter and see all the dogs that are there. They're either there because they were surrendered, picked up as strays, or were from abusive homes. I volunteer at my local humane society, and I will use a pit bull named Princess as an example. She was bred litter after litter just to make money off her pups. Even though characters are not alive, it's still a similar story. Kiddies are just breeding their sparkle mutts for fun, and in the real world that would be considered animal abuse. And because of those irresponsible people, those puppies end up in shelters.

But here is the problem with the limit. If there were to be a limit, it should take effect to those who have over 20-30 characters(meaning it won't delete the characters, just not allow further characters to be made if that user is over the limit). Some sort of error like " Sorry, you're over the limit." Or remove the option to make a character all together. But here is the downfall. Take Pikayu for example, she uses all of her characters, she would be fine, but someone who just makes characters is still getting away with their useless characters. At least it would stop them from making new ones in the long run. Unless they made a new account to do so. If that were the case, then a account like that should be banned permanently. Since that would count as cheating.

EDIT: I have added a poll to this topic.

Well, would there be a need for a limit if the characters were used the right way in the first place? Pikayu I personally applaud you for being able to do all that with your characters. That's something I'm not sure I could accomplish.

I'm unsure if Skul was referring to when Grey Wolf made a rule change which would have had an enforced limit on characters. But other than that, I don't recall there ever being a limit either.

I think there is another way to help this character problem. Though I'm sure this idea has been tried before, instead of just targeting all the bad characters. Perhaps we could encourage kids to make their characters quality and use them the right way. I have a little experience in making characters since I'm writing a fanfiction story that requires it. I considered writing a guide to making a good character, but again hasn't this been done? I haven't submitted a character in so long, I forgot if there was any sort of link to a character guide on the submit page as a suggestion to read.

This is more a preventive measure rather than a clean up, but I think it's worth considering since there's always going to be people who either can't draw (like me), or have the patience to sit down and think about what role they want the character to play when inserted into the Balto universe.
