As for evidence in the movie, I think the quote below makes it appear that there are no other Night Furies.

"The unholy offspring of lightning and death itself."

It makes it sound as though he appeared from no where, and was not braught to the world like other dragons, by natural birth.

Yeah I think so. I mean Dee's theory is exactly what this quote says. And if there are other Night Furies in the 2nd movie, then I'll be disappointed cuz if other people can own one then Hiccup won't be the only one with a Night Fury, and then he neither of them will be as special.

Narrow-minded thinking much? Hiccup and Toothless aren't special because of him taming a RARE dragon, it's because he trained a dragon...at ALL. The first Viking to ride a dragon isn't something to shake a stick at. And that's suddenly gonna mean nothing if another Night Fury shows up? It'll mean nothing if Toothless is able to continue his species?

Dragons in this universe are treated as animals, not mythical creatures. This world has it's own science and it's own logic and it's own traditions. The only reason Night Furys are described as "the unholy offspring of lightning and death itself" is because no one knew anything about this dragon. When something you can't see just destroys everything, it's frightening and you describe it however you can to get that point across.

They're obviously a reclusive species, and it's been said (by creators and the official website) that the Night Fury is "the rarest (and most intelligent) species of dragon". Toothless is not the only one of his kind to have ever existed. May he be the last of his kind? Perhaps. Or maybe just because you don't see any others doesn't mean they're not there. That's part of the job being "the rarest species of dragon".

Whether he's the last or just a rare breed, considering the mechanics of the How to Train Your Dragon universe, it is 100% unlikely that he was literally born from lightning and death. (Death can't bring life into the world. Uh duh)

Your right about the whole "lightning and death" thing, but what if in the 2nd movie they find another Night Fury and Snotlout owns it? Then he would also have the fastest dragon. See what I'm getting to? And then Hiccup might be overlooked a little and Snotlout would have even more to brag about.

What's wrong with a bit of competition?

Those were actually excellent points, Cat... I never thought about it that way.
@Fluffy: even if they did show another night fury in the second movie, I doubt Snotlout or any of the gang would own it. After all, they all have their own dragons already.

Maybe night furies are asexual. And when they reproduce, they die.

No, just an iterest in biology.
The night fury can have more than one offspring when it reproduces, but they usually spread out because they need a lot of space to live. If too many night furies are in an area, they will be forced to compete for resources and space and stuff. They are very competitive with their siblings.
At least thats my theory

I remember that possibility coming up way back when, with regard to legendary Pokemon.

That makes a great deal of sense, and sounds a lot less disheartening than the first theory.

Both of your theories, actually, were played out in old myths now that I think of it. Not with dragons, but a certain kind of giant.

I'm not a theory stealer! I'm just a person who is your BFF, and wants to be like you!

Yeah, I never thought like that. Instead I just thought he was created out of "Lightning and Death".... Dang, I can act so stupid sometimes!

You just take things too literal sometimes. Dont worry, it probably mostly not ir fault (standardized testing would carry much of the blame).
What are the myths?

Unless you see something on topic to directly talk about, just don't post. You're spamming. Take it to your fan club.

There's a lot of controversy about dragons. Overlooking various mythologies, it seems reasonable in the context of HTTYD that Night Furies would reproduce much like other dragons, though the question of a different cycle raises a number of questions. The two key ones are 1) since it seems they were on a different arrangement from other dragons, why was that so? 2) What other effects would that "why" have?

Well maybe night furies aren't part of the dragon family, like how some animals closely resemble an animal species, but have the genetic makeup closer to that of a different species. I think thats called convergent evolution or something.
