I think it's his determination. Course he kinda does loose that a little bit when he went over the cliff.
Then the white wolf came in a gave him a nudge to get it back. So a bit of all the above.

what's that go to do with anything, I'm just saying Balto's mom also helped him out
It depends on WILL and if your mom loves you a lot then you would have the will to come back from the WAR alive to see her again instead of dying 'cause you think you're parents don't love you

^ She was testing him. And it was because of those that he got to Aleu and was able to help her. "Tough love" basically. She wouldn't have let him die.

That is true that the whole thing was test to see how much he puts love into Aleu.
