I believe the best way to come close to understanding or actually understand what the MLP:FiM hype is about is not to judge it by its overabundance of fan creativity, but to watch the show itself. Not whatever random episode pops up when you search YouTube for MLP. No, do as most did and start with the two-part pilot. It explains a whole lot and introduces the characters. Mind you, that was before the show grew a beard, so to speak, and Hasbro/The Hub became aware of and acknowledged their actual main audience. Continue from there, and avoid jumping to much later episodes too soon.
One thing to consider about MLP:FiM is that it is different from earlier incarnations in the sense that it's not a merchandise-driven 26-times-22-minute commercial made only for Hasbro to sell their toys. It wasn't even conceived by Hasbro sales execs or something. It is actually a series of ascended fan videos. Its creator, Lauren Faust, played with MLP when she was little, and she based FiM on her childhood memories. Also, most characters had to be recreated/developed entirely newly because Hasbro lost their rights on most of the original cast, so why not put some more thought into this process of creativity without assuming that any future viewer of the show is only so smart (if at all, seeing as TV execs often suppose that even adult viewers are pretty much brainless) and give the characters and the plots some depth?
Then again, these words come from someone who doesn't find Disney's reboot of Doug too horrible because he actually watched it beyond the first two or three episodes and up to the very end. (That, and I didn't grow up on Nicktoons.) But that's an entirely different topic.

^ ... dude. :/ Estamos Condenados wrote: Thanks to all the rambling going on in this thread, I decided to check out a few episodes. And from what I've seen, for a show for little girls.........It's not that bad a show. Heckuva lot better than most of the kiddie-show crap that's been stuffed down our throats as of late. The animation's good, there's good character development (Rainbow Dash FTW!!), and unlike most kids' shows today, it actually teaches important lessons without either talking down to us or beating us over the head with the moral. Good show for the kids, overall. This, 100%. Kids' shows SUCK these days, but MLP: FiM is so good and decent, with great character development (as you said) and great morals people can relate to. <3
