He's supposed to be the big, bad, and mean villain of Nome. I like this line of thinking, here, too. If they intended Steele to be a purebred (which they more than likely did) that does rule out malamutes as a purebred mal won't have blue eyes - like a few others have said. Yep. I would agree with this. And I'll expound by saying that perhaps Steele is a mutant, XD. But seriously, perhaps he was just a huge husky. This was the 1920s, though, and back then dog breeds were entirely set in stone, so he also could easily have inherited his size from a malamute ancestor several generations back. This is true. I'm pretty sure abnormal eye colors can be what's known as a benign mutation (which is rather rare, but not unheard of; see the blue Maltese cat, for instance), so such could occur in a Mal. I think I saw a photo somewhere of a blue-eyed malamute when this same topic was being addressed.

Take a look for yourself: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:WOWAK ... ee-Kai.jpgActually an Alaskan Klee Kai is smaller than a husky, more of a "mini husky". :) This particular breed also wasn't around in 1925 when the serum run took place. The Klee Kai was developed in the mid-1970's (and then wasn't even released to the public till 1988). The more you know! :D

The other thing to consider is that in 1925, siberian huskies didn't look like they do today. They looked more like Balto and Togo (the real dogs). Steele looks more like a husky of today, but bigger. Pretty sure there were no dogs that actually looked anything like Steele in 1925. With that in mind you could pretty much say he was anything, because even today, deformities aside, malamutes don't have blue eyes and siberian huskies are not as big as Steele was.
For that matter, you wouldn't have seen a husky like Jenna back then either. After the serum run Siberian Huskies suddenly became popular enough to be inducted into the AKC as a standardized breed (in 1930). It wasn't until after that point that huskies began to take on a more uniform look as they were more selectively bred, and the blue eyes didn't emerge as a common trait until much later. It's part of the breed standard now though.
The facemasks in particular as seen on Steele and Jenna didn't really exist to a wide degree back then either, so actually in 1925 Steele would have been quite the spectacle, being the only husky around with a facemask like that and blue eyes, in addition to his size.

Apparently they were almost non-existent in the 1920s [as we know 1925 is when the run took place]. And according to a couple sites they weren't even registered until 1935. So... would that make him one even if he was cause they weren't even registered yet? Being black and white I can't say for eye color, but some of these dogs really look like they could be a model for Steele.

You're actually right Roi. http://www.wayeh.com/malped/img/grippofyukon.jpg - Look at this dude from 1920-30 gallery. He looks like Steele. And is he was a husky there's nothing wrong with his eyes because, Togo had blue eyes too. Another weird point is that Steele has really small ears. Alaskan malamute standard says that Malamute's ears are medium sized, but small compared to the head. Well, I'm thinking more and more that he is not a husky.

Okay First off it really shouldn't matter, he's an arctic breed of some sort.
Alaskan Husky: Maybe its possible, though alaskan huskies are technically a breed, they are just husky mixed with some other dog, Most cases its Hound dog. They are bred this way for speed purposes, and these dogs are mainly what people use in the Idiarod (Spelling?)
Siberian Husky: Most probable, as they CAN be big at times. I've owned Many Huskies in my day (And one currently) And Some of them have been quite tall (not Bulky but talk and lanky) So I believe Steele to be a siberian (even though it does really matter to begin with) And the fact that he is bulky could also be due to the fact that he's a "Villian", which makes the most sense.
Alaskan Malamute: NO, He couldn't be a Mal (I own ALOT of Malamutes, Most mixed with wolf, but I am the proud owner of a Pure Bred Malamute) I Plan to eventually breed them. I've been around them enough to know this.. Mals Do NOT have blue eyes. Most often Malamutes Have Amber or brown eyes. If they have blue eyes they are mixed with something else (not a pure bred) sorry to say but I doubt steele was a Mal, if he was then that was an error on the animators part (which is possible if you don't know much about the difference of different breeds and their standards.
So theres my 0.2, C:

Thats a pretty good argument. But its not often when S. Huskeys are just black and white with no hint of grey or anything like that. I think hes a mix.
