Mostly the only thing that went afoul was the bad press, which is why I linked to those articles above. If you read them, you will see that it was not just one of these incidents that was caused by driver error, but many of them. But since a bandwagon had already been started up, complete with torches and pitchforks, the press made Toyota into their personal scapegoat. At that point somebody could deliberately drive into a brick wall, then call the press and say their Toyota drove into a brick wall all by itself and nobody would question it. Which is exactly what began to happen. Just to put this into perspective, check this out: http://www.internetautoguide.com/auto-r ... index.htmlNote that this is just ONE example: There are two recalls for the 2010 Dodge avenger, one of which could cause the brakes to completely fail, the other of which could cause an engine fire. Now ask yourself why those are not getting any press whatsoever. I don't know about you, but an engine fire sounds pretty serious to me. And so does the total loss of brakes. So why are we not seeing this in the news every single day like we did with Toyota? Food for thought.

Luckily, an engine fire doesn't normally kill a person with a runaway car (like the state trooper who died in his runaway Lexus http://www.sandiego6.com/news/local/sto ... QsByg.cspx ) Panic can strike even the most experienced, and trained driver, when they're put into a situation they're not familiar with. Brakes are a more major thing, but it's more then likely nobody's been killed, or injured in those accidents, thus why they get little attention. Another reason, is that Toyota at first attempted to hide they had a problem, denying they did, till people came forward with a wave of complaints, and a sudden rash of accidents (whether related to the pedal recall or not, I wouldn't be surprised if a good number of them were just for the attention.) I'm not intending on smashing Toyota and defending Dodge, but I do feel that Toyota had (maybe still has?) a real problem on it's hands, and if it were any other company that had a parasitic recall like they did, that there would be a nearly equal amount of outrage, and negative media attention.

Whatever.
Still everybody I know I tell them not to buy a Toyota. Toyota can say what people WANT to hear, but not take action. The saying, "too good to be true" applies here. Obviously Toyota is afraid of losing business, which isnt surprising, so they doodle on their press page that everything is nice and dandy.
Im sure DaimerChryslers much better off. I did take a look at those links before posting this reply.

Alpine wrote: I do feel that Toyota had (maybe still has?) a real problem on it's hands The only problem Toyota has right now is the excessive negative publicity coming from incidents that were in large part driver error and in small part mechanical failure, and the fact that it's lingering long, long after Toyota has already fixed the problem. Baltoluv is a good example, still thinks Toyotas are dangerous when there is zero - and I mean ZERO - reason to believe that. And I quote: Quote: Toyota’s engineers have developed and rigorously tested a solution that is both effective and simple. A precision-cut steel reinforcement bar will be installed into the accelerator pedal assembly, thereby eliminating the excess friction that has caused pedals to stick in rare instances. This was not done today, this was done a long time ago. The cases that got the most publicity from what everybody assumed was a sticking pedal were more like the figurehead for all of this, the guy who said his accelerator pedal stuck when it was later proven that he had wedged the floor mat under the accelerator. and drove for 20 miles like that without putting his car in neutral, pulling off to the side of the road and turning the car off, even though the 911 operator was telling him to do exactly that. Pure stupidity caused that, not mechanical failure. This is a fact, not conjecture. And yet there are still people today who think Toyotas are unsafe because of it. baltoluv wrote: Toyota can say what people WANT to hear, but not take action. And yet they DID take action, as I outlined above. You just hate Toyota, for whatever reason. There is absolutely no reason nor justification to tell anybody that Toyotas are unsafe. None. By the way I'm not a huge fan of Toyota either, but I do know the difference between manufactured paranoia and fact.

I know that they've been fixed for a while, and once they were in the spotlight, Toyota reacted quickly to fix the vehicles. I was putting it in past tense, since nobody seemed to be acknowledging that there was in fact a MECHANICAL issue with a number of their vehicles, as well as the design flaw in the 2010 GX460 which caused it's stability system to allow it to slide sideways.
The whole reason why they're still put in a negative light is justifiable, a lot of people no longer trust the vehicles, and those who stand behind them at the company level, due in part that they did brush it off at first that there wasn't an issue. But once the NHTSA and the DOT stepped in, they straightened their ties, and got to work. My dislike of most Toyota cars and trucks stemmed long before the recalls popped up, but as a car enthusiast, who's read about how Toyota started out in America in 1967 with the unpopular Toyopet Crown, to something that's pretty much at every dinner table in America, and they've made some spectacular cars, like the Supra Twin Turbo, and the Celica GT-Four, etc. But the majority of Toyota's American offerings are these drab little putzy coupes, sedans, and trucks that need a serious redesign in their suspension (My 1986 Ford Ranger had the same payload as the new Tundra with it's standard suspension pack, which was 1600lbs...) it honestly surprises me on the amount of issues they've had in the last year and three quarters.
