I've loved Mario just about as long as I've been able to walk, but I'm afraid Balto wins my vote on this decision.

This is a pretty weird comparison, but I think that in a fight Mario would win, but Balto is a better hero seeing as how Mario never really manages to stop Bowser from coming back a week later and being evil again.

Thats because Bowsers always wiggled out of it, either from him suddenly disappearing in Super Mario 64 or surviving the fall of to the sun in Super Mario Galaxy.
Now back on topic, Balto really (if you think about it) is the better guy here. He uses courage to get through his battles, and not a mushroom coming out of nowhere. But then again, it would be interesting to see Balto face a bunch of Goombas.

Can you really say Balto would be the better guy? Sure, Balto is supposed to be a selfless, heroic character, but Mario is always risking himself to save Peach no matter how many times she's captured. They're each good in their own ways but they're so different that it would be hard to say either of them is the "better guy" in my opinion. Now if they ever fought for some reason then Mario with all his powerups would crush Balto who pretty much has the power of any wolf. Courage and help from Aniu can only go so far against fireballs, becoming giant, etc.

You are correct that maybe they both rank in the same level of being heroic. And lol yes, Marios access to all those Japanese features would out-rank Baltos courage and wisdom, bar none. Itd be fun to imagine Balto getting the flying power, going metal, or to go invisible.

Who knows? Maybe Peach gets herself in trouble lol

Maybe Peach likes being captured. And if Balto fought regular Mario than I'd bet on Balto to overtake him.
