I had a depression of some kind after watching WQ, because Aleu departed, and the combination of the Dutch version of Taking You Home really made me sad.

Plus, with the idea that there never will be a fourth Balto movie, makes me very depressed. Because, on some days I always think of what could have been.......

Maybe the fact that such a wonderful movie such as balto was never taken seriously and the studio just ran it to the ground would probably cause depression if you watched the first movie.

back then when I watched it was inspiring to me but after watching the other sequels I felt somewhat depressed that they just let it go down.

I dunno which depresses me more. Knowing that these movies are as obsessed over as they are or the fact that this is giving anyone depression xDDD

I only found it depressing a little after watching it once. It didn't last nor did I cry,
but I found it sad that the great hero that inspired the movie was gone,
and after reading what had happened to him and his team after the run, I thought it just was a shame...

The movie was touching on some levels. People were dying after all. And this REALLY happened.
Though the movie didn't show actual deaths, the coffin scene alone was enough to show the severity of what was going on in Nome.

As far as the sequels, it's obvious. There's no life risking moments. And what little there might be is taken away with it's childish atmosphere.
They're made to be purely for children. They just don't touch you like the first movie.

Agreed.

O man I think I know how you feel. This movie always leaves me emotional whenever I finish it. Even to the point of crying. This is coming from countless views from the VHS copy I owned when I was a kid. Then 10 years later with a region 2 imported Japanese DVD, I still get the same impact. Whether that's because of how well the movie closed off (when balto arrives with the medicine) or [heck] in the middle of the movie from when Balto watches the sled team finally taking off for the medicine - I dunno but for me, this movie really grabs your heart. James Horner's score plays a big part in this. It's an overwhelming feeling. The setting in winter yet a heart warming adventure (and yes, even a Christmas vibe) - I just can't EXPLAIN IT this movie does it to me everytime I finish it, now matter how many times I watch it.

The first movie was touching, but I wouldn't call it depresssing. The other two didn't even create the atmosphere for it. Even as a young child, right in the center of the target age when balto ii came out (7), I met it unimpressed. Balto iii came out when I was 10, and just seeing the cover turned me away, and rightly so, as I was proven when I finally saw it at 14, despite my life interest in aviation. (i am now a student pilot) At fifteen, I still love the original.

Sad, possibly; but depressing? See a councillor.

You're not. It doesn't happen with Balto II and III because they're not written as well and don't care about the characters enough.

For those of you saying things like "uh no, it's just a movie", there is something you need to understand. Part of the reason some of us love Balto so much is because of the relationship between Balto and Jenna. It was portrayed particularly well in this movie, and it affected people like me profoundly.

Believe it or not, not all of us grew up with loving parents or with any kind of stability in our lives as kids. I'm not going to speak for anybody else, but in my case I was emotionally abandoned as a child, and as a result I was desperate to make connections. This is not something that just goes away as you get older, this stays with you your whole life.

You can't possibly imagine the desperation, the emotional longing it creates unless it happened to you. What Balto does for people like me is fill the void a little bit. We get to experience the relationship we always wanted for ourselves, but vicariously. Don't underestimate the impact that has on some people. The fact that it's "just a movie" has no bearing on the real and tangible effect it has.

After watching and experiencing it, it can actually cause sadness or even depression. It's like coming down from some kind of emotional high, as reality sinks in and you know you'll never get to experience what you saw in the movie for yourself. I've experienced this myself many times, it's what I was going through when I wrote my Balto series.

Different people experience this movie differently, and not all of us are fortunate enough to be emotionally immune.

Couldn't have said it better myself.

@baltoluv~ When you say it causes depression, it's not actual depression. No offense, but i doubt you've ever experienced real, deep, dark depression that my father -and me, once- experience(d). You may call it depression, but someone like me, who knows what it's truly like, would say that the movie was just so touching, it got to you.

Although, like Xaqtly said, watching a movie that's so touching and beautiful could actually be a stepping stone to depression for someone who would never experience that, or never experienced that kind of love or care for another or yourself.

The large negative reaction here probably has to do with your use of the term depression. There is a critical sufferance between being sad or otherwise emotionally touched, and being depressed. Depression is a chronic disorder, medically diagnosable. I belive another rift exists between sad and touching. The balto movies aren't really sad, as far as I am concerned. They ended happily enough.

A movie like balto is probably closer to being "touching", which implys a wide range of emotions, and can't really be defined on simpler terms. You may feel down, not in your lightest of spirits, but not nessesarily sad. That quallity is a large reason we remember and are fans of balto. It stays with us. I suppose that could be considered chronic, but the feeling of not being in your highest of spirits never lasts long enough to be considered chronic. The feeling of being touched can't be outright defined really, but knowing the feeling of both being touched, and acctually depressed, I observed, considering the movie ends overall happily, that such an emotional reaction is more the result of relief, as things don't go pretuicularlt well for anyone until the end. Any sad note is likely to have come from the statue epilouge scene, which designated the events as historically inspired, and long in the past, as any movie of historical inspiration could make you feel, however, still, the final note wasn't exactly sad, but more along the lines of thoughtful.

Well said. THIS would be much closer to the truth about the intent of the writers and production staff, and the overall effect of the movies.
