I agree with you 100%. It's never like this in real life, so why are we making our characters like this?



I do very much like Antara, and am meaning you no offence Kepz, but you have a very good point. People are now just trying to get with popular users and their characters to make themselves and their characters popular, without even knowing anything about the characters!

Yeah this IS annoying xD Ive been thinking this everytime I visit TLKS cause a few people (whom I shall not mention) think thier characters are popular and I die of laughter honestly. Same with BS which is worse XD They think if they claim thier characters are known they'll get attention of those who actually HAVE characters who people look over and say ''Wow nice character, well developed.'' Unlike those other noobs. -_-'

I REALLY dont see why people want thier characters to be so well known like srsly. Having them known is good enough but think about it, it they were really popular, they would get ripped off all the time and that would be annoying to keep track of o.o

If you are, I understand. I felt like a complete noob after posting that, because someone removed their fave from my character But I was just making a gift for my friends (and I) because I don't think any of our characters had had the most faves before. I admit it, I brag sometimes. But that's just how I am, I wish I didn't and it's not a good thing, but at least I admit, and know I do.

I think complaining about "bad characters" is like complaining about "bad fanart". Nobody (unless they were super cruel) would post a complaint on the rant board about "ugly" drawings... saying somebody's art isn't up to snuff, it's too derivative, it's too underdeveloped, it's too inferior to something else... so why complain about characters in this way? I see all characters as something somebody took time to create. Just because they're not the best doesn't mean they're invalid or stupid... they might not mean anything to you, but they probably mean something to someone.

Especially on a site with so many young fans, it's unrealistic to complain about "underdeveloped" characters. Who cares if somebody's sexy/popular wolf isn't as good as So-and-so's sexy/popular wolf? Just let people have their fun. If these creations truly bother you... why? :/ I find it easy to ignore things I don't care for.

About the "took time to create" thing. Characters TAKE time to create, and we're obviously complaining about the ones that have little time and effort put into them.



Even as a little kid I failed to see the "fun" in copying people. Just the same, if they're "children" making the characters, then they have absolutely no reason to make a harlot as a character. Not only do I find THAT disturbing, but also the fact that you're okay with it.

Where is the requirement that characters have to have x amount of time put into them?

Is it fair we allow all levels of fan-fics, drawings, projects, gamebooks, and video edits, but characters need a particular amount of time put into them...?

Just let them go. It's not that big of a deal to ignore them. Nothing really needs to be done. You can make fun of them over AIM to your friends, but I'm not sure site-wide action and ranting is required to vanquish these inferior characters you speak of.

Also, I'm completely OK with sexually liberated people. Harlots as you call em ;D I like to let people do as they please. different strokes, different folks!

We don't allow all levels of each medium to pass. For instance a fan image of a picture of Balto colored blue is unacceptable. A fanfic that is a mere half a page is unacceptable. Fanart is a little more lenient, provided its not stolen artwork. But you can tell what fanart has effort put into it, and what's just something scribbled in Paint. However drawing and character creating are two different things. If one can't draw, they certainly can write, or at the very least put their ideas into words. Your argument is invalid.



Its hard to ignore that which is taking over the website, especially when people are willing to get rid of the section because of it. We who use it for actual purposes such as tracking down fanart would prefer this not to happen. And if that means "down with the crappy characters" then so be it.



I'm perfectly fine with them too. But there's no reason for /children/ to have such people as characters of their own. Its disgusting and its not becoming. They don't understand the situations and if one doesn't know what they're talking about, then they best keep to themselves.

Well, I thought we were talking about characters who are popular/sexy, not spam, but as for the characters who also seem like no time was put into them... a mod has given them the OK to exist on the site, so I'm OK with them too. There's plenty of room for everyone! No need to exclude! We're not going to run out of character room (though you might have to use parentheses), so why not allow everyone of all skill levels to coexist? You say " If one can't draw, they certainly can write" but I'm not really sure where you pulled that fact out of. I have known plenty of people who can neither draw nor write well, but they still take a pleasure in being able to create with the skills they do have.

I'm sure the mods reject characters unfit for the site that we never see, so I assume those who have passed are the OK ones. (And I think they're OK too.) To me, this just seems like a complaint against a trend... and while trends can be annoying, they're not necessarily harmful to people or the site. If there was a rash of people making nice, average characters, I'm not sure there would be a rant on this board... it just seems to be the lone character trait of popularity/off-standishness that makes some of you angry, which I don't get. I've seen way more characters that are underdeveloped and "nice" than characters who are underdeveloped and studs... why not go after those hundreds of average joes instead? You should probably start there!

You're completely missing the point. It's not a lack of skill, it's a lack of effort, and laziness, that we are annoyed about. Nobody in here is saying "kill teh less skilled ones!!" and I don't know where you're pulling that from.

Also, yes, there is a need to exclude apparently since we've had the requirement that characters must be mod validated. That is exclusion. Argument once again invalid.

Ah yes there has to be a standard of excellence here at Balto Source.

so let's see this standard of excellence applied across the board! Starting with fanart! Anything that took you less than 30 minutes in MSpaint must be culled, chop chop!

By the way, let's get rid of those nice characters with no personalities while we get rid of those camp-followers with no personalities! I guess we're going to have to start with Balto....

No need to get testy simply because you're completely missing the point. Its NOT A LACK OF SKILL. ITS A LACK OF EFFORT. And when I said "If one can't draw, they can write" did you completely disregard the last part of that sentence? Because you failed to mention it in your little retort.

Like like drawing and creating are two different things, writing and writing WELL are two different things. I'm not saying people need to make a poetic masterpiece out of their character's profile, they need to show that they're not making a character JUST to make the character, which IS a problem. It DOES take up space and it IS spam otherwise.

Just because the mods accept a character doesn't mean it socially acceptable. They just accept what isn't stolen, blank, or a sparkledog, and its not their fault. But whether you like it or not, even the mods are rather sick of this section. Its just another crapload of spammish Balto/Twilight/Ginga/fad knock-offs they have to sift through.

I don't understand why we would accept various levels of fanart but then hold characters to higher standards.

Think about fanart.... Some of it could be drawn better, if only the person had taken more time. Perhaps instead of doing just one drawing, they could have done preliminary sketches where they studied anatomy. Instead of submitting a fast black and white sketch, they could have carefully colored and shaded it to make it more appealing. Maybe they can't draw well, but no matter the skill level, art can always be evaluated and then improved.

Still, we don't complain about underdeveloped art. We wouldn't bash a sketch for taking up the space of more "deserving" masterpieces. We wouldn't look at a drawing done by somebody who is obviously very young and then chide them, declaring them lazy people who put no effort into their creations. We accept that they're just having fun, we don't ask them to improve, they're not professionals! Just because their work could be better doesn't mean that they didn't try or they're not happy with what they've made.
