Sable paused for a second, but wasn't surprised. She had been trying to keep up while staying partially hidden by the barrels, boxes and other junk that humans had dropped in the back-alley street. They stood for a second, eyes locked on each other, then Sable rushed out into the path of the doberman, who was closest. The Doberman skit to a stop and stopped sliding right before he ran into a calm Sable.
"Hey there" Sable said. The Doberman didn't say anything back, being torn between doing his job or stopping to see the red husky. "If you're looking for that mutt, he's over there" Sable added, pointing a paw in the opposite direction. The Doberman didn't say anything, but he knew where Brett had actually gone. But who'd argue with Sable!? So the Doberman nodded, gave an uncharacteristic sloppy grin and tore off in the opposite direction. Once Sable was sure the other dog was leading the butcher away, she turned to see if Brett was okay.

Sable studied the back of the grey and brown dog curiously. She stopped when he yelled to, but wonder was still itching at Sable's thoughts.
"Well why wouldn't I help?" Sable replied. "I don't think they would've killed you, but whatever that doberman was going to do... well it wouldn't have ended well. And I figured you were only doing it because you were hungry"
Sable glanced around but no one was within sight. The butcher must have given up.
"Why're you hiding like that?" the husky asked, trying to get a glimpse of Brett's face. Brett turned away, not allowing Sable to see.
"Nothing's that bad" Sable offered gently.

"I've seen a lot of faces and none of them have scared me" Sable replied confidently. "I promise... and you don't seem like the type of dog who's scary anyway"
Now that Sable had thought about it, she hadn't seen him at all before last night. Was he new? Or just hidden? A few voices calling her name jerked her out of her thoughts.
"Come on Sable, the race wasn't that bad!"
Holly was looking for her.
"I'm coming!" Sable called to her best friend. "I'm, uh, just talking to someone!"

Sable shook her head.
"I already told you, not many things at all scare me"
From the other side of the fence, Holly had finally figured out where Sable was.
"Come on Sable! Who're you talking to anyway?"
Sable waited for Brett to turn around but after both of them hadn't moved, Sable figured it was a lost cause.
"Well... I guess I'll probably see you around" Sable said, turning to go.

Brett sighed as Sable told him they'd see around, and heard how she turned to leave.
"Yeah... if I'll ever show up here again" he said quietly, but Sable was already gone. Brett turned his head, and watched her go with a sad look on his face. Then, he sighed and pinned his ears down, and started walking towards the beach slowly.
Once he got to the beach, the sun had already started to set. Brett crawled under the same boat he always slept in, and laid himself down on the ground, sighing heavily, then he closed his eyes. But still he couldn't get Sable off his mind...

Sable glanced over her shoulder one more time. She felt sorry for the guy... she'd never seen him around town before either. He didn't seem that scary at all, he might have even been kind of cute!
"What was that all about?" Holly asked curiously. "We saw the Butcher's Doberman come back, he was panting like he just chased someone! Was it the dog from last night?!"
"No" Sable grinned, pretending to shake her head stupidly. "It was just a misunderstanding"
"Well guess what! The dogs who..."
While Holly went on about the race, Sable nodded her head but thought about the strange dog she had just met. Who was he? Where did he live? Sable wasn't sure, but what she did know was that she was going to find out.

Sable smiled and said goodbye to her two friends, then jogged back to her front porch. Both of her parents were lying down on the porch and Sable greeted them with a smile. Years before, it would have been Nikki returning home, if she'd decided to return at all... Sometimes she wondered what happened to her older sister. But that was in the past.
Sable stepped lightly on the porch and sat down next to her parents, gazing up at the starry sky.
