The world will not end in 2012. The same way the computers did not all crash and the world come to a standstill in 2000. The same way that big science experiment on black holes or whatever didn't suck the world into itself.
Though frankly, it figures that the year London gets the Olympics back is the same year everyone thinks they're going to die.

These Doomsday scenarios, on the other hand, are held beliefs based on the instable grounds superstition and (argue with me on this) fear. And seeing that you can say what you believe without something to show for it, I'd may well classify this as one of those as well... Okay theory was the wrong word to use there. They are more guesses than anything. But so is everything else people have said about 2012. However, I never explicitly stated that I believed in these ideas. I just said that they were things I had heard. I never said that they were what I truly believed. For the record, I personally believe that 2012 will come with everyone thinking that something bad is gong to happen, and then pass by without a peep. Everyone will go on with their lives afterwards, just like they did after the Y2K scare in 2000. (Now that I look at it, I probably should have worded my first post a little better by explicitly stating that those ideas were just things that I had heard, and not what I personally believed.)

People who honestly believe the world will end in 2012 are either overly paranoid or are completely nuts.

Just to throw a point out there and go against the flow, of course, there is the possibility that it could happen. After all, as we are all quick to judge who it is that say when the world will end, counteractively, who are we -- as humans -- to say that it won't?
Meh, I don't believe it's our place to "decide" these things. Nor dwell on them. People have always battled to brave these forces, but we can never hope to control or overpower them. And although I'm sure this site has its fair share of religious, erm... intellectuals, I needn't have to get into the subject further to detail whom I believe has the power to ultimately determine our fates...

We're not talking about that the world won’t end on that date we’re talking about the idea of people saying it’s going to end at a particular point in time is stupid because no one can see into the future. For all we know tomorrow could be the last day or lets go out on a limb and say that'll it end on the 17/10/2054 Dr. Rex wrote: Meh, I don't believe it's our place to "decide" these things. We do decide these things, we (humankind) decide to do nothing about global waming, we create weapons of mass destruction, we unleash these horrible weapons on ourselves, we release greenhouse gases, we play around with our own fate and all these things could end the world anytime and yet we do nothing about them, we could decide to save ourselves but we decide not to.

Not saying anything about you in particular, Kay, but it is indicative of the unmitigated arrogance of our species to believe that we have the power to decide the fate of the planet. Feh. Baloney. To your points, I say this: a. Most people are frightened about pollution and "global warming" ( this nonsense, or the man-made version of it, has still never, ever been proven to exist in spite of all the hype, the rhetoric, annoying and manipulative musicians, and Al Gore) - in spite of what they may say to the contrary - because it means the probable end of the comfort zone we humans enjoy...and perhaps the end of our species. Big friggin' deal. Even IF it were true that human activity and depredations have increased the normal "global warming" shifts which the planet has experienced in the past, it is absolute gall of us to believe that we can actually kill the planet or its ecosystems forever. The Earth is a powerful, immense thing. And it has survived far worse cataclysms than anything we have thrown at it in our short time here. And it will survive long after we simpering dingbats are long dead as a species. And it will heal any damage done to it. Certainly, it might take thousands to millions of years for some aspects to disappear. But in the life of the planet itself, that is a very small stretch of time. Those time stretches only mean anything in human terms. In planetary terms, they are nothing. b. Most people fear nuclear conflict for the same reasons mentioned above. They're afraid for their own sorry selves...their own survival. Nothing else. No matter what high-toned rhetoric they might use about "the environment" and "peace". It's evident even in your closing statement where the priorities of humanity lay: " ...we could decide to save ourselves but we decide not to." In the end, all that rhetoric boils down to " We don't wanna die. We don't wanna go extinct." We human beings are peculiar, pathetic things. And should we live to evolve past our own greed, insecurity, hate, and indifference, we MIGHT just be the better for it. IF we survive our own ineptness and stupidity. But even if we do not, the Earth will still be here, and in time it will erase any shred of our existence from itself. I can see that we share a similar view of human kind but I won’t dwell on that. However I can see what your saying, the world as in the Earth we live on it will continue when we’re gone, it did after the dinosaurs died out (due to a possible meteor impact) and through the ice age and at least 5 other major extinctions one where almost 98% of life disapeared and yet life kept going. Even after we or some other force destroys mankind I agree that the Earth itself will most likely recover and move on to another form of life (planet of the apes anyone?). We all know life can survive very hard conditions (I won’t go into that though) so it's stupid to say life will not continue when the human race eventually disappears. But we the human race are in control of our fate when we consider the world ending are we not thinking of ourselves becoming extinct? When most people think end of the world they think of the human race dieing out and that is a very selfish thought because just because human kind may die out does not mean the end of the world for other species on our planet but because of our nature we think that no humans = end of the world, which I think is the point you're making but correct me if I'm wrong. The Earth will be here long enough for another species to become dominant and the process to happen all over again except maybe they will learn from our mistakes. However I am a firm believer in Global Warming but I don’t want to start an argument about who’s right and wrong about the issue because I know it'll be pointless as in I'm not chaning my mind about the issue and I doubt anyone else will either.

The world will not end if we take care each other and take care our mother nature. But.. who knows? Maybe there will be a meteor or something struck Earth and do make the world end. I don't believe that the world will end so fast like that (it's... pretty difficult to believe) =]
