I can't help but feel that this whole thing is pathetic on more than one level. We've got Iran and North Korea trying to show the world that they are the best there ever was by assembling (or attempting to, assemble) nuclear weapons. We've got a global economic crisis on our hands, and PETA complains about a fly. For those who want to for whatever reason defend the fly for having feelings and etc, well, by that observation, I can also call them architects of bio terrorism for spreading disease. lol but of course I don't believe that, because I don't believe flies have feelings on the level of humans. Their disease-spreading nature as well as their niche of degrading biological material is just what nature intended them to do.

But this whole incident just goes to show how sheltered this society is. People complain about the war and related issues, but it's one of the things that enables people to complain about their leader swatting flies (and even flood the news with celebrity death for three days, for that matter) rather than the very real threat of nuclear war or national security.

Wow. That's sad anyone would care about a stupid FLY! I mean, people swat BILLIONS of flys every day in just one small town alone. Flies can reproduce 100s of other flies in their lifespan, which in itself is only 2 weeks or so. Yet PETA worries so much about the president swatting ONE. I'm amazed the news even reported it, considering the war, economy, and infrastructure breakdowns recently. Then again, Micheal Jackson dies and the news won't stop talking asbout him for WEEKS on end.

This is coming from the person that sent an angry letter to America's Next Top Model for using live hissing cockroaches as jewelry (gluing jewels on them)...

BUT COME ON.

Slapping them is a quick and humane way of killing a fly.
Fly spray kills slowly the flies and probably suffer (as much as a fly can!)
Also its bad (or at least not good) the environment.

People seem to be getting more and more nuttier as the years go by. Whats next for PETA, protesting every time someone steps on an ant hill. So I guess the killing of a fly is more important than all the real problems facing the world.

My reaction is exactly the same as yours, Jersey. I mean, I bet the people who work for PETA (or volunteer whichever, I don't really care) swat flies away from themselves all the time in their own homes. Seriously, of all the things to protest for animal rights, it's "Don't hurt flies, they have feelings too." For cripes' sake, there are BILLIONS or even trillions of flies around the world. They are nowhere near endangerment or extinction, so get a flipppin' grip PETA!

My goodness, you're joking right? Are you KIDDING? They're protecting a stupid fly, and calling it innocent? It's bad enough you even have the fly in your house, but you have to use a "special" device to "take it back outside?" These people are idiots. No one cares about flys. They're not really good for anything.

Although I don't mind some insects because they have a purpose. For example.

Spiders: They get rid of the pests. flys , mosquitos, etc.

Termites: (Not the one's that eat wood under the house. The one's that build huges mounds.) The reason we have sky scrapers and tall building such as the Sears Tower (Now known as the Willis Tower. bleh...)

And others have purposes as well. But I have no patience whatsoever for pests that don't have a purpose.

Although I agree that this whole instance is stupid, I suggest you be more mindful of what you say. Most organisms have their biological uses to life as a whole. You must understand that all of our lives depend on biological processes that are carried out by the smallest organisms. Just because something is small and perceptively insignificant does not mean that it is useless. The fly is food for other organisms, and flies depend on crap and other waste products to reproduce. I believe that they also play a role in the process of bio degradation.

Don't get me wrong - if I see a fly in my house, I am going to swat it. If I see a silverfish, spider, or cricket, it's going down the toilet in a tissue. That said, I do not actively do this. If they are immediately disturbing me, I will. However, my main dispute with what you wrote is that you said flies don't have a purpose. In truth that is a false observation.

It is also the easiest, when it's on a window, just hit it as hard as you can, if it remains alive, hit it again, and again, until it is dead.



I'm not sure billions of flies in one small town alone get's swatted, it seems unrealistic, thousands perhaps, million really unlikely, billions... no way. If your talking about a small(ish) town, it could be around 100-200 thousand people? It would be amazing to see this figure...

I would say around the very high millions, if not, 1 billion fly's per day, worldwide...

I can't help but laugh and agree with what everyone else said. Flies aren't that useless, just as mosquitoes and other annoying bugs, but they can be a pain in the neck (last night a fly kept me awake I really wanted to swat it).
And well, everyone knows that Obama isn't perfect so...

Yeah I guess you're right. I know they're a part of the food chain or whatever, but that's just my opinion. I know they are important to some species (food) but to me, they're just unwelcomed pests.

PETA is nutz. I mean a fly for crying out loud! The little things have a 24 hour life span, millions are squashed everyday. About the only thing that this could possibly be is a publicity stunt on their part, I mean I get they're animal rights people, but seriously, everything kills flys on a daily basis, and the things die after 24 hours anyway, by the time you 'catch and let them go', their natural life span might be over anyway. I know being this judgemental is uncharacteristic of me, but simply put, as hard as I could try, there's no possible way not to consider this stupid, that's something that me and Jersey can definently agree on.
