I think part of the porportion problem is due to the camera angle, we're rather close to the wolf's head and we're looking up at it so the body may seem out of porpotion. The earsmay be partly hidden by fur or pinned slightly. We must also take into account this is realitively early in production, bugs are still being worked out likely. On the plus side, the fur texture actuelly seems pretty good, even on the 'smooth' spots of a wolf's fur, like the face (you have to look closely to see what I'm talking about with this one).

I suppose so. One of the things that annoy me is the apparent 'hair' on his head.. doesn't flow well w/ non-anthro (quadruped) animals, IMO x.x; And, even as far as 3d animated films go, it looks like the wolves' designs are going to end up being just too exaggeratedly toony/corny... it may be good animation, but in my opinion, ugly design work...

There is the thing we can only see this angle of the wolf, we can't see the back or a side shot of the wolf. And if, as I said earlier, is from the point of view of another tranqulized wolf, it may be slightly distorted from that. We also don't know how far into production this shot was taken, it could even be a test shot just to test the animation. This is also, I found out after some searching, likely the Omega wolf character, so the animators might of wanted him to look somewhat more cartoony due to the free spirited personailty they're giving him (at least that's the kind of personality it seems like they're giving him judging by what can be found), so maybe the Alpha wolf character will look more realistic. The thing is, besides the plot, almost NOTHING is known about this film.

Frankly, that's very likely to be the final design. Even with 3D films they draw all the character designs beforehand, otherwise there's no point even trying to render them in 3D. You'd have no start point and it basically just wouldn't work.

If that's a test animation then that'll be the character design, it's unlikely they'd get that far into production only to completely change character designs, it's too much work to render all that fur.

While the fur texture itself looks pretty good, the overall design is disappointing.
It's not because of the angle either, the head is just plain out of proportion looking at a real wolf's head the ears are too small and eyes too big really. Even at that angle.
I know, I know.. it's an animation but still, it's disappointing considering what can be done with CGi.

Could the 'cartoony style' of this wolf be due to the character's personailty? They've done that in films before, I think Sid from Ice Age is an example, he's got an overall more cartoony design that most other characters, likely due to his personailty. So if this is Humphrey, maybe the more toonish qualties are to fit his free spirited personality. We won't know until we see another wolf from the film.

I don't know, I've been looking and that's it for now.

I think the background isn't really gonna look like that but it might be 'cause of the picture or it's from the other wolf's perspective that's tranquilized so that could in theory, explain why the wolf looks like that.

That's what I said earlier. If it is from the POV of the other tranquilized wolf, the background and the wolf would be distorted to an extent, depending on how the animators chose to do that. Honestly, I don't care about the animation or character style, so long as the plot and characters are well developed.

I think the background may also be like that because it's in 3D...?

Bump.

Yeah, I just found out that the reason the background looks like that is because the movie is going to be in 3D and this picture will be in the new issue of entertainment weekly with a pair of 3D glasses.

It's hard to tell from that one shot, but the animation quality looks less than fantastic.

hmm.. when I read the title for this .. I was thinking about the two henchdogs in Pixar's Up.. :p..

here's the wikipedia article on this it seems that Richard Rich (Director of Fox and the Hound and Swan Princess ) are working on this.. as well as Ben Gluck (from Brother Bear 2)..

Well, at least the wolves are the main characters, maybe it'll be half as good as Balto. That would entertain me at least a little bit.
