So for the most part, its likely his files are a lost cause? Alright...is this type of virus likely contagius? By that I mean will it be able to spred somehow? I know some virus's can make the computer send emails containing it to other computers?
Could a firewall have something to do with my computer problem?

Could a firewall have something to do with my computer problem? firewalls are ment to ask you before downloading things to your computer. and blocking some files. it could be the problem, but i dont think so. And yes. Hes data is totaly gone. there is ways you can send in your HDD to save data on it. but it cost alot of money. several 100 dollars, if not more then a 1000. i really dont know. A virus can spread. but in this case i think its not a chanse. tell him to keep hes computer off, take the internet connetktion cable out of the computer and it should not be a problem with any thing. but a virus cant just spread like *poof* into your computer and kill it. IF the virus try to spread it goes threw emails with attatched files ore links, same as in for example. MSN. like: Haha ;P *long link with your msn addres in* dont fall for it. it could by virus, spyware, trojans, you name it. I would also like to add. If you think you have a virus, REMOVE all cookies, that way, MOST viruses cannot access your accounts. For Advice on Viruses: http://www.pcanswers.co.uk/forumThey should give good advice. And YES - It's safe to download anything from that website, we used it before - it actually works. Godzillawolf wrote: Well this isn't my computer but its still something that needs help. A friend of mine has a strange virus on his computer, when the computer boots up, the virus basically refuses to let him access the computer, instead causing it to display a black screen with a skull and cross bones. He can't access the antivirus because of this. How can he remove this virus without losing all his data? He has important pictures and such on the computer.
As stated before, it is impossible to save the computer. Rumour has it, the creator of this virus is also the creator of the virus that freezes your computer, not sure if it's true.

Its a laptop BTW. I can help you with that one. Overheating is very common in laptops and is usually the result of having too many processes running at one time. The more your computer/laptop works, the warmer it gets, which means the fan must work more. It can only do so and so. About your friend's virus, formatting isn't the only option. If you happen to have an older computer you don't care about, but can fit the harddrive as a secondary harddrive, you can boot the computer using the primary drive's bootfiles and then isolate the infected drive from your system folders. Once that is done, you can either take out all the pictures you need, or you can scan the drive with an anti-virus first to see if you can have the virus removed. If none of this works, the only way would be to insert the drive as the primary drive and then boot from a CD (such as Microsoft Windows' installation CD's) and have it clear out the partitions and format them.

Alternatively, you could disable auto-run completely (which is much safer than any anti-virus anyway, and it will clear out the unnecessary processes). Which OS does your laptop have?
