Some good stores are Gander Mtn.,R and R sports(the one in my town), and gat guns. There are some more, but I don't rely much on wal mart for bows and arrows, but the accessories such as stabilizers, quivers and broadheads are plentiful at one.
As for brands, some good ones are
Parker(they also make the best crossbows you'll find in the market)http://parkerbows.com/pb/2007/
Mathews solocamhttp://mathewsinc.com/
Hoythttp://www.hoyt.com/index.php
PSEhttp://www.pse-archery.com/
Limbsaver(not specfically a bow company, but they did create the deadzone which is an outstanding compound.)http://www.limbsaver.com/deadzone.php
Bear(the first company to make compound bows)http://www.beararcheryproducts.com/
if you are looking for composite bows, recommend seven meadows archeryhttp://www.sevenmeadowsarchery.com/genwebpage.ihtml?formid=1
You should go through them all all and choose the one that has what you are looking for.

Archery is fun and a good challenge and training for your body! (:

Yes it is very good for your arms since it builds up your arm strength. My current bow is 20 pounds, but I can easily pull 45 pounds. My current goal is 60.
I'm probably not going to make the bow until the snow melts.

Get yourself a real English Longbow then you have some training infront of you.

For traditional bows,I prefer recurves and horse composites, but the longbows are good.My mother's boyfriend has a few longbows however.
