It seems like having political topics on here has never even been tried so how can we know for sure if it will or will not work out? We know because people here can't even agree to disagree over music and movies, heck most even fight over things I don't understand why - Example: I've seen people arguing over someone's avatar.. So there's no way people here could manage to restrain themselves over political debates. Which is proved almost every day when yet another fight breaks out over seemingly nothing.

Also, political topics are not allowed by default. This is to avoid flame-wars and fights. This is a large community, whereas most are children. We all know that children below the age of eighteen, and even as far as far up the 20's have an undeveloped rational sense.
I've seen adults fighting over politics, and there have even been cases with real-life murder because of politics (ladies and gentlemen, let me to present to you: John F. Kennedy who was assassinated in 1963).
I've already nearly overstepped the line myself, but bottom line is that political topics will never be allowed.
Never. Never. Never. Never. Never.
Might as well give up discussing it. It is one of the few things here on this website that will never change.
Religious topics are prohibited for similar reasons.
EDIT: The fact that we cannot even have a discussion about whether or not these types of topics should be allowed without posting with aggressive undertones (you know who you are) should be proof enough.

I'll list the reasons why political conversations will never be allowed, just to keep myself from being too verbose.
1. This is a kid's site. It isn't meant for political conversation. 2. Though older members are here, the age range is still, in the majority, somewhere between 10-16, which most people consider too young to really be able to think about/be concerned about politics. You can't vote till you're 18 anyway, so why worry about it so early? 3. Though older members may be concerned about politics, they cannot debate issues properly with younger members. 4. Many of the issues that could be debated are not allowed to be talked about here anyway. 5. Flame wars WILL happen almost EVERY time. Why? Because some people do not know how to look outside the box and consider for a moment that their way isn't the right way. I'm not saying that everyone is like this, but the fact still stands. 6. Not all of the members here are from the U.S. Why should they care if we silly Americans argue back and forth about who's right? They have a right not to be disturbed by that stuff as well. 7. Finally, and most importantly, this is NOT a political website, it is a BALTO website.
After looking at all that, and what has occurred when a few renegade topics have sprung up in the past and survived for an hour or two before a mod could lock it, I think it's pretty self-explanatory. And also, what Lux said. Even talking about whether or not this should be allowed is causing a fight. Got a question still, I'll gladly answer. But if you take a moment to rationalize this in your head, it just can't work here. I'm sorry it has to be that way, but experience has proved it.

I won't try to "fight" anymore about if they should be allowed because it does prove your point about why they shouldn't be here. I just think it would have been nice to have given it a shot but I now understand that it won't happen.

Extremely subjective. (To give an example: I'd say 18 is too late to start worrying about politics.) I think point 7 explains it all and gives it justice. Although, general political topics shouldn't be attacked though. It's always the specifics that get people ignited - name-calling, government-calling. Although something as general as socialism versus capitalism is far from Balto related. Well, in most ways. So I guess 'general' politics are too scarce here anyway. The resulting fights are a shame, but we all know that politics-related fights happen everywhere really. The case tends to be that if online people seem to be more inclined to do the opposite of contructive debate. Not to mention tolerance.
