Did you know it's actually called St. Valentines Day? Named after St. Valentine: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/St._Valentines_Dayhttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saint_ValentineValentine's Day or Saint Valentine's Day is a holiday celebrated on February 14. In the West, it is the traditional day on which lovers express their love for each other by sending Valentine's cards, presenting flowers, or offering confectionery. The holiday is named after two among the numerous Early Christian martyrs named Valentine. The day became associated with romantic love in the circle of Geoffrey Chaucer in the High Middle Ages, when the tradition of courtly love flourished. Valentine's Day has regional traditions in the UK. In Norfolk, a character called 'Jack' Valentine knocks on the rear door of houses leaving sweets and presents for children. Although he was leaving treats, many children were scared of this mystical person. In Wales, many people celebrate Dydd Santes Dwynwen (St Dwynwen's Day) on January 25 instead of or as well as St Valentine's Day. The day commemorates St Dwynwen, the patron saint of Welsh lovers. In France, a traditionally Catholic country, Valentine's Day is known simply as "Saint Valentin", and is celebrated in much the same way as other western countries. In Spain Valentine's Day is known as "San Valentín" and is celebrated the same way as in the U.K, although in Catalonia it is largely superseded by similar festivities of rose and/or book giving on El Dia de San Jordi (Saint George's Day).
Personally though, I don't like St. Valentines day - I'm always alone, always heartbroken during these times. It's just my luck, but fortunately i'm only 13 - So I do have a full life to live before I start thinking about these things... But UNFORTUNATELY i'm already half way through Puberty, alot furthor then most people in Year 8... And I start feeling alone at times like Christmas and St. Valentines ;[

Okay, I would like to be the first person to SUPPORT Valentines Day.
While I'm only 12 (first year of high school--- just started 2 weeks ago), I think Valentines day is sweet. I love seeing people coupled up and being all flirty etc. Why? I don't know. Of course, there is a guy who I really, really like and was having the greatest time with in year 7 (we 'sort of went out' for half a day- wow!) but he's gone to a different high school to me, and I miss him so much.
But because we don't really 'celebrate' Valentines day here, it's all good. We'll be all like "huh. it's Valentines day today." And the year 12's (seniors) have got this thing going where you can send somebody a rose ($4) or a-- get this--- a singing telegram ($2).
So you can pay $2 and get a senior to go to your boy/girlfriend (or just someone you want to embarrass) and they will sing (really badly) some sort of love song. And it may be from 'anonymous.'

That singing telegram sounds like something ya would do to get back at somebody with. That just sounds like and uber-embarassing thing to do to a person(especially if ya like them). Your twelve and your in high school? We don't start 'till we're like fourteen or fifteen.

I'm kinda with Vivid on this one. Valentine's day has turned into more of a commercial holiday but then again, which ones haven't? It can also be fairly sweet too. Even if it's just telling your partner you love them and "Happy Valentines" or just telling someone you like that you like them, directly or anonymously, it's still sweet. Admittedly it can also be embarrassing, particularly if you're unfortunate enough for someone who likes you to do the singing thing.

Well, we don't have 'middle school' here. we just have years 1 - 7 (age 6-12) primary school and year 8 - 12 (age 13 - 17) secondary/high school. And I'm turning 13 in October. The telegram isn't so much for 'getting back at someone' but it is definitely for embarrassing them. Perfect for a friend that you have a big non-secret crush on.

In the UK it is anyway.

But UNFORTUNATELY i'm already half way through Puberty, alot furthor then most people in Year 8... And I start feeling alone at times like Christmas and St. Valentines ;[ I'd also like to add to some informational wealth here, the holiday we now call St. Valentine's day, though largely derived from this, was also largely a knock off/Christianized version of the old Roman/pagan holiday called Lupercalia. Lupercalia was basically centered around fertility though. As part of the "celebration and rituals" women would run around the Roman Forum, or other public places and their husbands (or boyfriends, if they had yet to be married) would chase them with leather stips. If they got hit with these leather strips, then they were pronounced fertile and it was believed they had a better chance of producing offspring. (This is all mostly from memory in Latin class. When I can find a nice informative site that has more detail, I will surely post it ^.^) As far as my opinion on the holiday, I suppose I'm a little biased. I've always liked the holiday because it's two days before my birthday ^.^ But, even so, it's not such a bad holiday. Sure, it's pretty commercialized now, but what holiday isn't? Everyone's out to make money, so why worry about it? And, it does still give couples a good excuse to try and do something nice for each other, that they may not be used to doing (or may have lost sight of, with work and other duties taking up their time.) Sure, I've had a couple of bad Valentine's Days, but for the most part they've been okay. You don't have to be dating someone to have a good time, even if it's just with some good friends and a movie. I am happy, however, to be spending this Valentine's Day with someone I do hold dear to my heart.

Offically. Exactly how I feel. I think it's becoming less and less meaningful each year and that's probably one of the most depressing things about it.
