This is a false alarm, I gather =) Whew...

I am suspecting this more and more. It's either "Friday morning quarterbacking" on the part of the author and anyone believing him (sorry, that's an American term meaning, basically, "jumping the gun" and "making assumptions"), or it's conspiracy theorizing by that author. Since he provided so little evidence and research in his article (and was so hot and aggressive...which seems to be very typical of artists, as evidenced by frequent behavior by same here on Animation Source, over on Balto Source, and on deviantArt), I have my doubts about him.

Incidentally, Lux, where did your quote come from? It's not part of this topic. It'd be nice to share that source with everyone. Was it from that resource site he linked...which I think has a message board attached to it?

It came from this topic on Squareforums. Zanarky usually has his facts.

Also, I haven't read through these links fully yet, but I also think that there is further clarification in the links TheRoguez gave us.

Well there's also some information about it here.

These also have quite a lot to read about the topic.

I find it very real and I highly doubt the bill is a fake. I do doubt that the bill will pass though. At this rate, with half the interwebz freaking out over it, somebody is sure to see how outraged artists are at the even idea of this, and send a complaint letter to someone of higher rank.

I'd also rather be outraged now and able to do something, instead of waiting for the bill to possibly be passed.

If I remember correctly, this was a bill that was put on the table in 2006, but was never passed. That Mark Simon guy is either living in the past, or is just trying to get people mad.

It is very possible, but it is not hard to throw artists up in arms. I mean, they do get ripped off often enough. Mostly because many people think art isn't something worth paying for. But anyway, it is really not something to worry about. I mean, from what I know, when you publish something on the Internet it is copyrighted to you (which is why theft on AS is very much frowned upon) until you croak. However, you also have the right to do whatever you want with it, plus you can copyright a character - that is if you send it in to the copyright office.

All in all, being ripped off by corporate America happens, but doesn't happen often enough to merit much attention. What artists need to be aware of is how copyright works, and not over-extend what they think they can copyright (colors, hairstyles, poses, whatever).
