The only reason I heard of the Iron Giant is someone got it on VHS for me one birthday/Christmas/whatever... it's likely Cats Don't Dance suffered from the same thing.

I never heard of it, but I might check it out. Too bad it didn't get enough advertising. Then we might have owned it! (My Dad loves musicals)

Accually, I can recall Cats, Quest, and Giant being advertised.

I loved all 3 accually and Cats is pretty good...but that's comming from a cat lover's mouth.
The only song I did'nt like was Sawyer's song and at the end, the poster that ticked me off most was the Twister one...why Fransis and Cranston on the poster and not Danny and Sawyer?

I recently saw the movie advertised on a laptop at a local radio shack so it seems that it might not be as unknown as I thought.

I did see the movie when I was a kid. I think my parents rented it for me, because I only remember seeing it, once. I just remember something about a cat who sings, and he's trying to get the female cat, but he's blocked by the antagonist, who's some really bratty kid with a Hulk-sized bodyguard or something...

I don't remember much else, sadly. I remembered it was pretty good, but again, I haven't seen it in more than ten years.

I do remember the Iron Giant being advertised... but it was done more so on the Kids WB channel (and, judging by the fact that a lot of you hadn't heard of it when it was in theaters, probably wasn't advertised anywhere else.) Which, in some ways, makes financial sense. If Warner Brothers only advertises the film(s) on their own network (The CW, or Kids WB in the morning) they probably don't have to pay for advertising, and even if they did, then they'd just be paying themselves. So, in essence, it was free advertising. (At least, I'm just judging this by what I've learned in my university advertising classes). Of course, they learned the drawbacks of this, since not that many people knew about these animated films. Of course, now that Warner Bros. made movies like Batman Begins and the Dark Knight, which they advertised the hell out of, they've learned their lesson. Though, I can only wonder why they haven't made any more animation movies recently...

I just opened up youtube yesterday at midnight(today or what ever) and gave watching Cats Don't Dance a chance and it was a really good movie. Though as all movies have draw backs..Like I didn't even like Sawyers singing as well in the end.. it was way too high pitched from the other songs she sang. Humor was good however. Hidden Jokes at MGM studious and other famous tv personnel or Characters mentioned or taunted. Like King Kong having a Daffy Duck personality go figure. Especially classic comedy in the start.. poor Sawyer. Overall worth watching again but as usual. All Unadvertised movies.. are pushed under the red carpet of other famous or More " world popular" movies

That and the new trend toward the computer generated stuff; it's expensive and hard to do. Not as hard as drawing a billion individual cells, but it still isnt' exactly easy.

Because they failed at advertising.
