Yes, that's what I was going to say : most of the pictures on profiles are already pics "stolen" from other websites, and used without permission. So preventing stolen pics to be stolen...Errr...
But, yes, not everyone is in that case, so I will add something to prevent right click. Besides, there's no need to spread these stolen pictures even more.
Also, I will add a warning so that everyone knows it.

I think the best way to go would be to have official BS/TLKS MSpaint friendly linearts free-for-Animation Source-use that people can use for char designs for the profiles.

Could be an idea. Most visitors probably wouldn't use pictures without permissions if they could gain access to free pictures they're allowed to use.
I'm wondering how it could work. Maybe I could start a project with something like this, then all the pictures sent would be offered in a "free" library. What do you think of the idea?

I think it's a great idea. When I was a member of another prominent forum, the owners had such a library, and rarely did I see cases of art theft, and matters of art theft were dealt swiftly (usually they would get a warning, and if they continued, they would be banned). And I know that there's plenty of artists who could contribute to this site who are members of the site. Perhaps some of our more prominent artists could put a plug in for it on their deviantArt journals, even.

Disabling right clicking in profiles really won't do anything at all to prevent art theft (if any)...

I won't say why, because it would probably attract the wrong crowd. It's happened before. Claim the art that you drew with that pencil in your hand and on that piece of paper in front of you and call that good enough. 99% of the other media used here is already stolen anyways, so why does it really matter anymore that we all be concerned over something that has spread epidemically on the site over the years?

That's not a reason to not try. I mean, if every site would include a little protection like this, there would be many less "stolen" pictures.
Yes, it's always possible to get the picture; but you have to take into account that the visitors who steal picture (young visitors) are often not very skilled with computers. Besides every other method is longer for getting the same result. So they wouldn't bother.

Well... if you were to want to add more protections, might I suggest disabling Print Screen as well. There are a few Perl scripts and Java applications that have a similar effect to DVD encryptions, leaving the browser window on your application blank (or black) when you try to save an image (BMP, JPG, PNG, and a few other associated file formats). Very useful for discouraging inexperienced people that get around disabled right clicks. Unfortunately, this code is not open-sourced, at least it wasn't when I put in an order form for $279 for 2 code formats- one for Cisco systems and the other directly for Windows/Apple Server software.

Another reason why I sad that disabling right click won't work is simply because it really won't work on some computers. Some XP users with certain updates for Internet Explorer (like XP SP2#2082207 ... ) and even Windows 98 without its last update will not have Internet Explorer with the ability to run the scripts correctly, therefore they will have a disfigured site layout and be able to get around 70%(?) of site scripts. (the only good thing about this glitchy update is that spyware and adware are much more difficult to get). Plus, many Mac users will be able to get around this too, need I say why?

It seems much too complex for something like this. This is a website, not a "hard" application. And I don't want to add applets, Flash or anything only to do this. I'm sticking with Javascript for this kind of things, but I doubt it allows preventing print screen.

Well no, because I didn't really use javascript to do it, but HTML event. Most people use tons of javascript when in fact there is no need to :

<body oncontextmenu="return false;"'>

Although Internet explorer 6.0 added an icon when you see an image in full screen which allows to save images, so I also had to add this tag :

<meta HTTP-EQUIV="imagetoolbar" CONTENT="no">

That's all...no script, no compatibility problem.

Javascript to block right click is a horrible idea. Directly disabling a browser's functionality is even worse. The only thing it will do is annoy the heck out of visitors. Visitors enjoy the full functionality of their browsers. Take it away, and your visitors aren't so happy anymore. The only way you can completely protect your content is to never upload it. Ever.

Anyway, a print screen command isn't the only way to bypass it. There is a much, much easier and obvious way to get to the images no matter what OS, or what browser you use.

To get to the point... A simple little "© So-and-so 2008" at the bottom of your own work is all the protection you need. This is the internet, if someone was seriously really dying to steal your art and claim it as their own, they would do it. Chances of it happening are extremely slim.

This is why I am more opposed to to disabling right click, because it is more irritating than its just purpose. You can't stop art theft (nor really prevent it whatsoever on the Internet), and the fact that most people are ridiculous enough to claim art that isn't theirs to people whom they've never met other than the Internet. That's why I voted Uh... because to put it simple: I could care less about this problem.

So why posting here, then...

The only thing it will do is annoy the heck out of visitors.

Personnally, yes, sites which block right click annoy me, but the sites which block right click, often do it on ALL pages, and with an annoying pop-up message.
You will notice that I only block right click on very few pages : the fanarts, and now the profiles. That's all. And no annoying pop up.

And once again : most visitors who steal pictures, don't even know how to use the print screen feature. (or any other way) And if they do, they won't "steal" many pictures because it's much longer to do it this way.

By the way, I'm only answering to what the visitors ask, and many of them ask for their artworks not to be stolen. Even if it's not the best protection possible, it's STILL a protection and better than nothing.
