Well, there are other breeds of husky other than a Siberian husky. He might be part Mackenzie River Husky. They originate in Canada and are large and stocky, bred for freighting in single-file through deep snow. Here's a picture of a female (I couldn't find a picture of a male.):

I have to say that he is a Siberian husky. The markings fit and that breed of husky is more full than the other husky. 'Course, it may just be how the animators drew him. But, i still think the siberian husky is the one.

He's not a half husky. He's a full husky and if you look really close on a picture of him stuffed, it will say "Balto, siberean Husky 1921-1934." Something like that.

Yes, the Siberian Husky is more full than the Mackenzie River husky in the picture I posted. But they can be a lot stockier. I feel rather stupid now. I should've remembered that Mackenzie River huskies can vary widely in type, so I should've posted more pictures. Well, here's a page with pictures of Mackenzie River huskies. http://www.angelfire.com/on3/happyhuskies2/makriv.htmlI would put this in my first post in this topic, but people might not see it, so I'm putting it here.

I mean I saw pictures and in my oppinion an Alaskan Husky doesn't match up to Balto. Yeah, i know it's not oficial and I myself think that Steele's an Alaskan malimute myself but some people thought he was an Alaskan husky I am saying. ^^;

I think he's part Siberian husky. The Alaskan huskies look nothing like him.

Guessing purely on the time era, I'd say Siberian Husky.
Mainly as at that time Siberian Huskies weren't noticed as an actual breed, same with Alaskan Huskies as far as I know though most people referred to them as Siberian Huskies and the producers will have wanted to stay as close as possible to the real event, especially having changed Balto to a half-wolf. (Thanks Sepp for the info XDDD)

JerseyCaptain wrote: I'll say it again, as I have hundreds of times on Balto Source, on this forum, and elsewhere - it doesn't matter that the AKC, UKC or any other breed club didn't recognize the Siberian husky before 1930. A breed they were nevertheless...for hundreds of years at least. Bred even by primitive natives to a certain standard (of their own).
Balto was a purebred Siberian husky of that tradition. There was NO wolf in him...there was NO hound in him (as with Alaskan Huskies).
The legitimacy of a breed is not determined by a national or international breed club. you make good points jersey however this form is based on the cartoon version of the young american hero, not the true dog
