Odds are they do care and just have a difficult time showing it. I've been in that boat dozens of times, and I'm not even a parent.

Actually, it is fair. There comes a time when you just need to stop getting so many pets. You don't need a new one as soon as one dies. Just be happy with the pets you already have for now. And if you have no pets left, then just wait alittle while, evantually you will get another one.
