You can choose to be single for the rest of your life if you want to. You can choose not to get married. Since when is it NOT your choice whether you want to marry or not?
I can't really explain what true love is. But I agree with Dragon Tamer and Dunkin for the most part. Exactly. And it extends to other kinds of relationships too, like mine with my father. Growing up, I remember he was always an authoritarian (in other words, a "Because I said so!" kind of dad). He constantly looked down on the things that meant the most to me. Then when I was nine he divorce my mom and sent half of our family down the tubes, myself included. I'll never be able to forget those things, but I've forgiven him. And I still love him.

I'm sick of people saying it's a choice or a decision. So it's a decision to love someone? A decision to be married? Yeah, really makes sense. Not. Actually, yeah, it does make sence. My apulugies, what I meant was that if love was a choice, we would be freely choosing who to love... but we can't, can we? We would be often switching who we cared for most. My example of marriage was a little off, but would we stay married then or would we not, and go for someone else "better"?

Cobalt --> Again, you are thinking of things in a different sense, specifically what could be called a "dominant emotion" sense. To those who allow their emotions to control them instead of controlling their emotions, it is as you say. But love is more tha just an emotion, more than wanting to go out with a particular person or marry and/or stay married to a particular person. It is a desire, often consciously maintained, to put another's interests ahead of your own. I cite again my situation with my father. I gain little, and a consistently reducing amount at that, from having any emotional connection to him. I choose to love him as my father still, though, because I know deep down that this is the right thing to do. This is the active sense of love: to (as I said before) put someone ahead of yourself when you stand to gain nothing from it.

Well, this topic is one about love applying to people in general, but in the romantic sense, so yes, I think there's a reason to post what happens if you can't control your emotions. It's a mixture of things people have said in this thread, not "everything I said". Also, your situation with your father... isn't really what we're talking about here. I'm pretty sure nikkianim was posting about it in the romantic sense, so in that sense it stays unfortunately.

I'm pretty sure nikkianim was posting about it in the romantic sense, so in that sense it stays unfortunately. The two senses I have outlined are not entirely different. The only difference is that in the case of romantic love, there is an obvious motive. When it extends to the degree I described earlier, wherein a man takes a bullet for his wife, that difference is gone because, as I pointed out before, taking the bullet and sacrificing himself for his wife would leave him unable to enjoy the romantic part (or any other part, for that matter) of their relationship.

However, I also agree with Tibb (scary, huh? xD). Once you do find it, you will know it. You will do anything for that person, you'll accept any changes they may have to the best of your abilities, but you'll never even begin to be able to "explain" it.
How can you explain a feeling that makes people want to jump through hoops at the drop of a hat? I've had that feeling before. It's usually hormones. Oh, well that's a blunt way of putting it. Honestly, stop downplaying what people are trying to say. A feeling that makes people want to jump through hoops at the drop of a hat is usually called an emotion, not "hormones".
