Err... discussing BF/GFs isn't mate talk. Where'd you get that from? Also, the word 'sexy' isn't considered mate talks either, although several members have complained it shouldn't be allowed, I don't know why...
But if you said something like 'I need someone' without mentioning that you meant in real life, well of course you're going to be told off, because people automatically assume you mean mates.
I kinda partially agree with you Bruno, mods do escape with things and members have been scolded for modding, but only sometimes. It's one of the rarer occurrences of our lovely ShoutBox in any case.

The only thing I agree with you on is the "boyfriend/girlfriend" talk. Whining about not having a girl/boyfriend is just as annoying, irritating, and disrespectful as "mate talk." It shows lack of backbone and immaturity and makes me and the majority of this site sick to their stomach.

Everybody talks SMS here...when you say brb, or gtg, that's SMS, heck, even BF and GF are SMS. Most of it's nothing really to make a big deal out of...

First of all, let's not be hypocrites here. Although we all know that in theory, moderators are bound by the rules as everyone else is, we also know they are only human, and will thus break the rules. So far so good. But with being a moderator comes a certain power, and there will always be people who abuse that. Moderators, in effect, determine what is allowed, and they will sometimes be harsher on others than on themselves. That's only natural. It's not fair, but that's just how it is. Now, for the record, I'm not saying all moderators are corrupt, but to say that they are all free from sin is equally wrong. So stop complaining about it, there will always be abuses, and there will always be people pointing those out. Just remember that a majority of the moderators does a decent, correct job.
That being said, I don't really get the ratio legis for the distinction between talk about real mates and role-played ones. There appears to be a distinction, about which there is some consensus, but why is that distinction in place? Could someone please explain?

Nobody is allowed to break the rules, moderator or not. Heck, even Steet is bound by the rules! Although, as cogitor said, we are only human and we make mistakes, the examples given are not examples of mate talk. Talking about having boyfriends or girlfriends are allowed, but it only violates the rules if: 1. you begin spamming up the shoutbox with such talk 2. if people (mainly mods) are asking you to stop, but you continue to do so. Also, the word "sexy" is not necessarily mate talk, as its definition in the dictionary is "attractive to the opposite gender." Now, if it was involving R-rated(or higher) type roleplaying, then that would violate the rules.
