Part Six...
Nome, 1923
A young adult Steele was sitting in by himself in a large empty room in Nome, he was fresh on his sled team, no experience at all. He had a look of depression about him that made him look weak and frail, the complete opposite of what we would usually expect from him. Another husky dog around his age had now entered the room and was walking towards Steele, he seemed to look sad too, but more towards Steele’s pain then anything else. “I’m... I’m so sorry Steele.” Steele was silent and didn’t react in any way to what he had said to him. “I’m not sure what else to say.” Continued the Husky. “Then don’t say a word... he’s gone. There’s nothing more to it. He made his feelings about me clear a long time ago, he hated me! He blamed me for what happened to mom! What kind of a dad does that? Huh... What kind of a dad does that?” “He didn’t hate you Steele, he loved you. You never met your mother, he spent years with her. He just needed to work through some issues; he would have come back for you.” “Yeah well, I waited for him for years. He was my father... I loved him, I idolised him and yet he still went away. Maybe getting attacked by wolves was the best thing that ever happened to him, so he could finally be rid of me and be much happier.” Steele stormed out of the room. “Steele come back!” Steele ignored the dog and went out into the snow. He ran to the frozen shore line and began to cry, although not the first but certainly the last time he would do such a thing. This night would the one that would change who he was forever, for this to happen just one more guy had to be in the moment. “Hey are you okay?” said a light voice behind him. Steele turned with watery eyes and saw an adolescent Balto standing there looking very concerned. “Oh... I’m... hey I remember you, when you where a just a pup... I threw a ... sorry about that.” Said Steele. “It’s okay, you where kind upset last time I saw you... pretty much like now.” “Uh-huh” “You wanna talk about it?” “Not really, it’s complicated you wouldn’t understand. You haven't got it bad.” “Yeah right... have you seen where I live? At least it’s warm you live, and also turkey free.” Steele looked at Balto with a look of confusion. “Don’t ask” said Balto. “Look... I know you wanna help, but I don’t need it. I’m fine... I just lost someone that’s all... my dad.” “You lost your dad? That’s tough... you can have mine if you want, I’m sure he’ll love you.” Steele found what he said unusual, but was intrigued. “Well you can’t stop there. What’s wrong with your Dad?” “Oh... put simply... he hates me, can’t deal with me existing, all in all not a nice guy. Told me to get lost... it’s not my fault I am who I am.” Steele didn’t understand what he meant. “What? What’s wrong with you? Besides the scruffy appearance.” “Ahhh... well that’s the thing you see. My father was pure bred Husky dog... but my mother was... my mother was a wolf-“ “What!” “Yeah I know, it sounds like nothing but-“ Steele stood up to face Balto in a confrontational way. “You get the hell away from me!” “Oh come I don’t bite I-“ Steele smacked Balto across the face, Balto flinched terribly. “What the hell are you doing!” shouted Balto. “Did you mother do it? Did she kill him? Was it her fault?” “What? Are you insane or something?” “Shut-up!” Steele hit Balto again and he went down. Balto looked frightened and tried to struggle away, but Steele was older and stronger and he pinned him to the ground. “You took him away from me for good! I’m gonna make you pay for this you hear!” Balto was shaking badly. Steele just looked disgusted at him. He let Balto go. “Just get out of my sight.” Said Steele. Balto limped away as fast as he could. Steele turned and looked back at the town of Nome, he gave the town a very sly smile, he had some things he had to do now...

Part Seven
Anchorage 1929
“You lost the girl... not a very good start mate.” Said Nigel whilst walking along the docks with Steele. “Oh well... I tried. Now lets part company.” Replied Steele. “Oh no, it’s not over yet pal you’ve still gotta-“ Nigel was cut off when Steele slammed him against the wall of a wooden hut on the jetty. “Hey take it easy mate-“ “Now you listen up limey! You’ve wasted enough of my time now! If you had done this to me a few years back I would have killed you by now, but seeing as I’ve mellowed a little in my old age I’ll settle for just breaking your legs! Tell me what is going on! And give me a ***** good reason why I should do this!” Steele let Nigel go, who was now slumped against the wall. He seemed to drop the charm act and looked quite serious. “You’re right... I’m sorry. I should have been straight with you from the start. But to tell you the truth... I wasn’t sure I could trust you.” “You don’t even know me.” “I know enough Steele... leaving your team for dead in the middle of nowhere, the Steele who always looked out for himself and couldn’t care less about others. Do you blame me for that?” “I don’t have to justify my past to you... I wouldn’t do that for Balto, the one guy who I hurt the most. You know why? Because I don’t have to, not anymore. Now I’m asking nicely... what is going on?” Nigel sat up and took a deep breath. “About a year ago, when I was still in London something happened to me that changed everything. I’ve done a lot of bad things in my life, somebody knew that about me... I was walking in the docklands a night like this, when a figure appeared in the shadows and claimed that I needed to make up for the bad things I had done in my life. I told him I wasn’t interested, but he just kept on talking... he said in these exact words ‘Save the small one in red’. When he finally went away, I just fell asleep somewhere, I was that drunk. Then I had a dream... well more like nightmare about some pup being murdered in a sewer by two hungry dogs. It didn’t stop, even when I opened my eyes... I first I thought I was having a stroke... then it went away liked nothing had happened. I was gonna ignore it, but something in the back of my mind told me I had to check something out. I don’t know why, but I knew where I was going... I arrived in a sewer tunnel... she was dead... it wasn’t a dream, those sons of bitches killed her. Someone’s daughter... sister... grandchild. She was wearing a red collar.” Steele was silent and had an expression on his face that he hadn’t had for a long time. “That’s pretty rough...” said Steele softly. “Yeah... it is. And its gets better, the figure returned... I tired leave London, that wasn’t far enough, so I left the country... got on the first tramp steamer I could find and made it to New York, still not far enough, this figure just kept on finding me. Then I decided to listen... he told me that he needed Dogs, other animals and even Humans to help those who can’t be helped by normal means. I’m no hero Steele, never have been. I explained I needed some help, so he told me to get some.” “So you came to me?” “Not at first, the plan was for me to ask Balto... He’s a hero alright... But I figured I needed a different hero. Someone who could be more ruthless, cunning in his own way and perhaps somebody more like me, someone who had made bad choices in his life and on some level wanted to change. I saw you rescue Balto, I was there last Christmas in Nome watching you and him face off with that psycho... that’s when I new you where the one I needed. I’m sorry I lied to you, I really am mate. But a girl is in trouble, so I need to know... are you game?” Steele took a deep breath and paced around for a few moments, he thought back at his past and came to one conclusion. He answered Nigel’s question...
