Actually Tool is considered Progressive Metal.. I know cause I have all of their records.. and one of my favorite bands Dream Theater is highly inspired by groups like Tool and Muse..

Black Metal is good if you listen to the right stuff, a lot of folk/viking metal is very heavily black influenced and can be quite grand (Moonsorrow being the most notable). Of course you do tend to get a lot of stupid trvekvltgrimblack elitism.

Avante Garde Metal is also usually heavily black influenced but is often far removed from folk or viking metal. For instance, Mortem when it first reformed under the name Arcturus they were a Symphonic Black Metal band which later progressed into post-black/Avante Garde which I must say is some of the most amazingly well composed metal in the history of awesome.

Also note Sigh, Unexpect and Muadlin in the Well, all quite awesome Avante-Garde acts.

Tool are overrated all to hell, the only good records they wrote were Aenima and Lateralus. The listener demographic consists mainly of pseudo-intellectuals who look for hidden meanings in every single action Maynard makes, because let's face it, no-one really gives a stuff about the other members.

Nu-Metal is the lowest common denominator of suck. Metal is bad enough with all these whiny Metalcore acts with emotions and lameness without Nu-Metal. It's the kind of hard music which tries to be as mean as possible without upsetting Pepsi by actually having a real opinion. Nu-Metal is owned by MTV which alone is enough to dismiss it even before you listen to 2 chord, 4/4, chorus, verse, chorus structure restricting itself the being under 4 minutes so that MTV can slot in a few Pepsi plugs before plunging you back into a new track only distinguishable from the prior because of the hair cut

Metal is okay, I guess. There's just some Metal that's annoying to me, but on the other hand some of my favortite songs are metal. By the way, Evanesence rocks! My fav songs by them are Fallen, My Immortal, haunted, and a bunch of others. Most people think that they know teh band when they can't even name 5 songs by them.

Here's my opinion. If the genre has the word "metal" in it, it's metal. Nuff said.

You really could not br more wrong about the whole "metal name" thing. Furthermore, Mudvayne is not a good example of nu metal (haven't heard Red), and Tool isn't nu metal at all, cogitor.

The only decent nu metal bands I can think of are System of a Down, and I guess some of the stuff Rage Against the Machine has done can be considered nu metal.

The vast majority of nu metal is just pop-rock with down-tuned guitars and wannabe tough vocals.
