Of course Pit Bulls aren't 'mean' or 'evil'. But they aren't 'good' or 'sweet' either; only humans can posses (or be aware of) those qualities (and maybe some high-end primates, who knows).
But as HrryNrmn said, being evil and being dangerous are different things. Pitt Bulls are inherently dangerous, even when well trained, because in the right circumstances (be creative!), even the best bred and trained of them all could kill an average man.
So are they evil? Nope, they're oblivious.
Are they all born dangerous? Yeah (exept maybe for mutants born with no teeth

).
Yes, but surely this is the same with any dog?
Any dog can 'turn' on a human being. I mean, dogs will snap. My Grandad had a Border collie who was very well-trained and intelligent yet he would bite. It's not just Pit Bulls.
Of course, Pit Bulls were bred for fighting but that will only reflect on a Pit Bull nowadays if he's introduced to fighting from a young age. If he is trained as a fighting dog then yeah, I'm afraid to say that he'll always be solely a fighting dog. If he's raised with no idea whatsoever of the fighting ring then he'll just be more or less like any normal dog.
It is indeed so for any dog, or any pet for that matter.
But the potential for dammage in case of an unexpected event is greater with a pitbull than in the case of most other dogs. If a pitbull suffers from a temporarily irresistible impulse (caused by external effects like sudden stress) resulting in a violent reaction, he can kill you (depending on your phisique, of course), whereas this is not true for smaller/less dangeous pets in the given circumstance.
But the same of course applies for other dogs like german shepherds too; they are probably almost equally dangerous.
