They didn't have too. Balto actually ACTED more wolf-like in Balto 3. He howled twice in the film - just before 'you don't have to be a hero' and after him and his team returned with Duke. And he didn't howl once in WQ. He just acted like an annoying, over-protective father

Nah, I thought he acted more dog-like. I mean, dogs howl too. I know that they didn't have to, but they still cut out a huge chunk of his personality. I'm not trying to force anything on anyone - I'm just voicin' my opinion.

Seeing the replies to this topic... I must say, why does there need to be a balance between the two? Being part wolf is what Balto is! It's not as if he ceases to be either one in either movie. They could have very easily made the movie about a different character, one who is pure dog, and people wouldn't complain. But they chose Balto, not Lassie. If it doesn't mention his wolf side, it takes a part of his character away.
Also, as for this whole "balance" thing... why should there be a balance? Every Super Mario game has Mario as either a hero or an Italian hero or an Italian plummer hero. Is Nintendo like, extremely late on making a game with him being Italian or a plummer? How about Star Fox? There's never been a game about him being a fox rather than a pilot. Why is that, hmm?
Because, it takes away the part of them which makes them special. Balto is special because of being half dog and half wolf. Mario is special because of being an Italian plummer hero. A movie which has Balto as a dog and not a wolf dog... why not just make it a Lassie movie or something? The movie took away something that made him special. People very well should be disappointed in that case.

I've heard a couple of people saying they don't like Balto 3 because they're are no wolves in it, and how Balto doesn't act wolfish etc. etc. They seem to have forgotten that Balto is also half husky, therefor making him half dog XD The 2nd film was about Balto's wolfish side... so the third is about Balto's doggish side. And I LOVE sled dogs, which is why I love Balto 3 so much!
Your opinions please. Do YOU mind that there isn't very much wolf acting in this film? 'Cuz I certainly don't

I honestly don't care if there isn't any wolves in the movie. As long as its about dog mushing.

For me, the most beautiful and most moving parts in the original was when the white wolf appeared before Balto.
Both sequels lacked what the original had - intensity. The wolves helped bring about that intensity.
As BetaWolf said, why not just make it a Lassie movie?
