Me, I enjoy the Balto character because of the way he was portrayed. Because of the fact that he never did what he did because he wanted to be a hero, but because he was genuinely concerned about the welfare of those children (or one of them, at least).

His looks and design have just as much an impact as the voice actor behind it. I believe there is no one in the world who could've played a better Balto than Kevin Bacon. The whole cliché of being the "outcast lone-wolf" was also what I think sparked some of your interest. If Balto had more popular friends, it would've made a great difference what what kind of character he'd turn out to be.

Yep, that's quite a bit of what made me like him as a character :P

The character who is treated differently because of what he is... that's always been my favorite type of character. This comes in two forms -
1: Being hated or feared because of what he is, or
2: Being treated inferiorly or being made fun of because of what he is.
I like each for different reasons, and the movie depicts Balto in both ways.

But... cliche? Don't know if I'd call it that. Well, it is a bit of a cliche, but it's different when a cliche is done right, in my opinion.

Well, when I was 5.(when I first saw Balto.) I liked balto for some reason. I gusse I liked how he was brave.

 After I watched it I would, run around in my room saying"Steel No!" or"I have to bring the medicine!"

Now, I just like his percenality and how brave he is.
