I have a question...When Balto was looking for Steele's team in the movie, (which we know never happened) he marks trees by ripping off the bark.

He would not do that, but mark the trail with *cough* urine *cough* (which is still highly improbable). I've also heard stories of cats and dogs traveling thousands of miles home to their previous home or owner. I'm not sure Balto was incapable of this. Furthermore, (this is the actual question) I've read a website that stated Balto led his team through a very deep blizzard when the musher didn't know where to go, is this true?

Yes, according to Gunner Kassen, he had lost hope in finding his way home, yet Balto knew the way. Another reason why he is the 'hero' in this story. Sorta along the same lines as this topic, here is a qoute from an article I wrote a while back:
Quote:
1. Balto marked the trail to find his way back, but Steele marked it again wrong so Balto couldn't find his way home. But, Balto managed to find the way back. How? Well, i am not to sure, but he must have remembered the way back after he nearly lost hope and all that. It must have come back to him and even with the trail ruined. He still got back to Nome like the real Balto. Do you see the similarity? When Gunner Kassen gave up, Balto still knew the way back to Nome, like when Steele ruined the trail, Balto still found his way back. I can see a shimmer of truth in that and i don't know if i have just noticed that now after everyone else has, or if it's just a coincidence. But i think, it may be from the true story.

Here's a link to the whole article if your interested... ;)

The blizzard's winds were said to be gale-force (equivalent to a monsoon if I am not mistaken)

Monsoon? We have gale-force winds here all the time and I never thought them to be that strong. Kinda off topic though, but more too the original discussion. I can understand that the winds would be strong, coming off the sea. I think that in 'gale-force', you can have sudden gusts up to 80 miles-per-hour. So no wonder the sled actually tipped over once.

Hmm. I don't know. I do know that a monsoon is less forceful than either a hurricane or tornado. And that "gale" force winds (38 to 55 miles per hour, or 61 to 89 kilometers per hour). Which, I believe, is comparable (roughly...I'm not a meterologist or scientist after all. )

Ahh... well I don't know very much about monsoons, as the term 'monsoon' isn't used here. I guess "gale" force can vary, like "severe gale" force.
