Saying You're retarded is as offensive as a racial slur to me. Is anyone else bothered by it? People should be taught at a young age that predjudice is wrong.

I totally agree- it makes me so mad when people use this word in an offensive manner. People may say "oh, it's just joking around", but in truth it's not. There is nothing wrong with being retarded, like you said, people can't help it. But there IS something wrong with people using that word as if it were a bad thing. It is putting down people with mental disabilities when we really should be helping them up. People who are mentally retarded are just as valuable as anyone else. To me, using the word "retarded" in such a manner is just as bad a using the "n-word".

I don't think it has anything to do with gay people, I think it's just another way of saying "stupid" or sometimes "rude." --No, I'm not implying (sp?) that gay people are stupid.

Well I only use the word when I'm talking about Hannah Montana, but that's pretty much it. ^^ My mates call eachother that for fun, but it doesn't mean anything to us.

I agree... it's very popular among young people to call eachother 'gay' and 'retard' and other offensive things but they just take it as jokes. Heck, I must've called about ten people offensive things but no one takes it seriously.

I guess it's just today's language.

I feel like people are missing the point here. I don't care about people calling each other names. people call each other stuff all the time, no big deal. what IS a big deal is that the word is being used as if retardation is something to be ashamed of, which IT IS NOT. PEOPLE WHO ARE MENTALLY RETARDED ARE JUST AS VALUABLE AS ANYONE ELSE. the fact that people today use the word as an insult only shows how ignorant society is.
