Actually, the statue in Anchorage isn't of Balto, it's just a sled dog. Search 'Balto' on Wikipedia, it'll tell you. Here's a pic:

Oh man I totally forgot that I made this post. I'm looking forward to seeing your pics JerseyCaptain. Unfortunately for me things have changed and I don't think I'll be getting there anytime soon. Maybe someday, but for now I still have to go and see the statue in Central Park.

I thought you lived in southeast Asia...? Asia? What made you think that? P.S. I'm not in Nome now, I normally go during winter times.

JerseyCaptain wrote: I was there just this May. There and Anchorage. It was quite the amazing experience! I made some very good and strong friendships and connections in the historical community (including at the Carrie M. McLain Museum, which is the storehouse of Nome's history), and learned a lot. And confirmed what I had studied for so long. And I will be going back in about a year or so! (Wish I could share that with some of my friends in the community...) I have pics and video. I have been having problems with my DVD ROM drive, but expect those to be solved soon, so that I can post the videos. Meanwhile, I'm nearly done downsizing all of the pics I took (with my digital camera) and, after I post them to my Photobucket account, I will create a topic either here, or on the "Other" board, to share them around! Nome is a fantastic place...not what you could call a "vacation destination" for those who don't really REALLY want to be there (because, admittedly, it's a hardscrabble, no-frills kind of town out in the "bush"). But it is surely worth a trip! I recommend the summer for travel to Nome, as does the Nome Convention & Visitors Bureau ( http://www.nomealaska.org). Even in May I found some of the roads partially snowed in, and some services not available. They say June through August are the best times to go up there (June to July there is almost 24 hours of daylight...in fact, even in May, I found that, while the sun SET after 12:30 A.M., it never really got dark...nothing more than twilight). By September, the rains start in...and by October, it's snowing again. And November is a turbulent, stormy month. December through January brings very little sunlight (going down to just four hours' worth by mid January), and things for tourists don't really start in until mid May (even though the completion of the Iditarod, in early March, is a big draw). Aurora Borealis viewing also doesn't really happen until mid fall through the winter. Oooh nice one, plz send an archive of your trip in Nome when you get your problem fixed (if you dont mind.) Would love to see it as Nome (and Alaska) is a placethat I really want to go to some time in my life
