I think that that is why Balto got so much fame. Because he was just a scrub dog and wasn't expected to work well and then it was he who brought the medicine in the neck of time.

People in the US didn't even know there were other dogs apart from Balto, and if they did they thought they had a very little importance. Balto (and his team) was celebrated as "the one who saved Nome from dipheria", not as one of the dogs who actually did the serum run.
Aw.. well it's a bit unfair really. It's not as if Balto could have pulled the sled alone.

Both Balto and Togo are heros to me, but Balto is my favorite.
Togo was an experienced sled dog, so it probably wasn't that surprising when he and his team ran the longest distance during the relay. I'm not saying that what he did wasnt amazing, cuz it was. Traveling that distance in a horrible ice storm is very impressive and heroic, but then again, no one really doubted him.
I think that what Balto accomplished was much more miraculous. He wasn't thought of as a great dog, or one that was worth much. He had never ever been lead dog for anything. During that horrible storm when the musher couldn't see a foot in front of his face, and when the winds were strong enough to lift the entire team off the ground, he somehow made it through with practically no experience, and saved the entire town!
That's amazing to me. That's why I love them so much.

The reason Leonhard (sp?) Seppala put Balto as his lead dog to bring the Serum into Nome is coz Togo had already survived the worst part of the storm and already run such a long distance, I believe he wasn't too keen on Balto as he was no use as a lead dog, if Balto had been leading the team through the part of the relay Togo ran then the Serum would never had reached Nome and the dogs and Seppala would probably have died. Balto did'nt do much at all really, he just ran the last leg of the journey into the town.
That's why Seppala removed most of balto's history, he was angry that people recognized Balto as the "hero dog" when it was Togo who had done the hardest work.
Also, there many more teams on the Serum run and they are also mostly forgotten, when you compare what Togo and the other dogs from the other teams did to what Balto did it really isn't much.

The only reason Seppala was mad was because Togo was his favorite dog, and he's not getting any attention. So he ran the longest distance. That's notable and all, but so what? If it weren't for Balto, all those people in None would have died. Togo's just like the all the other dogs that participated in the relay (besides Balto who actually finished it) Togo ran part of the race, and passed it on to the next team. Every single dog that was in this relay is a hero, of course, but Balto is the greatest because he pulled through that ice storm with absolutely no leading experience whatsoever, and saved the entire town.
I mean, I really do love Togo, but giving him more attention than Balto like Seppala wanted, it just wouldn't make much sense...

Sure, there may have been other dogs that could have done what Balto did, and I bet that there were other dogs that could have done what Togo did too. But they didn't. Togo was the one to travel the farthest, and Balto was the one to save the town. Therefor, they are the heros.
