Well everytime I would walk past it, it was chained up in the yard. I heard that dogs that are chained up all the time are 3 times more likely to attack people..

Well ummm sometimes Chasity.. I trully don't encourage just chaining out dogs but most chained out dogs don't get the socialization they need with their "pack".. Dogs are pack animals and need that socialization. That lack of socialization could lead to aggresive tendencies towards humans and other animals.

It was a very tragic event, but crying over it, will do nothing at all. What we can do, is try and tell people to treat their animals with respect, and fair discipline. Animals do need discipline if they have done something wrong, but they do NOT need to be tortured. The dog might have had a bad history with people, or, it wasn't socialized enough, and it attacked out of fear, because maybe the girl tried to pull on its ear or tail, or something.
You can not place the blame on either dog or girl. The both had some fault in the situation that occured. And blaming a certain breed for the event, is definitely prejudice, and not right. None of us are perfect, so sometimes we are punished for our mistakes. This little girl made the mistake, maybe of provoking the dog, and got killed. There's not much elese I have to say.

Don't know what the laws are where this happened.. but to kind of play off of the last post... the owner would take responsibility of the actions of the dog and probably would be charged with child neglect.. plus if he didn't have any rabies, or something along that line.. he would be charged for those too. Atleat here he would

I'm aware of that. I just wonder why people have dogs if they can't take care of them. I mean, okay, some people work and can't take it out for long walks daily, but no walks at all, c'mon..that's pathetic.
My friend had a dog that never went for walks, never came in the house, ever. It had a really small yard and was outside 24/7. When I took it from her, (I, of course, had permission) I asked if he had a leash, "he likes to use a belt and a rope," is what she said back...It's really sad, actually..
Anyway, I am way off topic..Yes, I have to agree with Missy on how they were both at fault, but I think it was mostly the grandma's fault, no matter how good you think your dog is, don't trust it to be in a room, alone, with a 5 year old girl. As for the five year old, she probably didn't know better...

Pitbulls are bred to fight, it's instinct, they don't need a trigger to attack anything. It's like trying to tame an animal from the wild, you can make it tame, but it's instincts are still there. Pitbulls are known to do this, that's why they're not all that popular.

Ugh, you talk about bull ****. ANY dog larger than 30 pounds could have been capable of killing that child(not to mention that Pomeranian that attacked and killed that infant). You NEVER hear about the numerous attacks by Labradors(probably the worst tempermented dogs on the face of the PLANET, never a suitable dog for children), Cocker Spaniels, Springer Spaniels..... Why? Because a popular story that does not make. It's easy for them to gang up on dogs with a history of fighting or that are known to be lead around the shifty parts of town by rough looking guys. Not the "loyal" pets that SO many people own, how popular do you think THAT story would be?
My cousin was severely injured and almost killed by a lab when he was 7. Almost didn't make it out of the hospital alive, that thing went for his throat. And it was their trusted family pet that they had owned for going on 5 years. I'll never trust those dogs again. It's not that I hold a grudge against them or just don't like them.....it's just that I don't trust them because their genetic quality particuarly sucks from overbreeding(there's no other word to discribe it) and because I've seen quite a few go completely homicidal, including the one I live next door to(almost tore the leg off a repair man). I'd trust an hour old newborn with a pit bull but no one of ANY age with a lab.
To shoot down pit bulls because they are the only attacks you hear about is incredibly, sickly wrong. A vicious dog CANNOT be born. It HAS to be made. Go try to "breed" a dog that naturally wants to kill children. There's no "child eating" gene in existance. Genetics don't work that way if you haven't figured that out already and I'd like to slap those responcible for that crackhead Breed Specific Legislation so incredibly hard for telling people otherwise. That dog was probably poorly raised, improperly handled, allowed to dominate humans whenever it pleased..... little things that would create a monster out of ANY dog. None of these attacks would ever happen if people would stop being so selfish about how they raise their animals and think about their children, other people, and the dog's wellbeing for once in their lives. This attack and ALL others stem from pure ignorance and irrisponcibility. In NO way is it the dog's fault or the childs fault, AT ALL, and the death of both could have easily been prevented from proper rearing of the animal. People these days think training a dog with only commands and little treats will really prevent any major behavioral problems. If it's descended from a wolf it's going to act like one; people don't comprehend or understand that things like letting a dog put his paws on your shoulders or petting your dog every time he wants you to can make a very dangerous dog out of ANY dog of ANY breed.
You have no Earthly idea how many innocent souls are dying because of rediculous biased articles like that one. You have no idea how many families are torn apart because of ignorant people who support breed bans. Before you sentence a pit bull to death, imagine what it would be like to have your own baby that you've raised from a tiny pup no different from any other dog in this world torn away from you and put to death because of the way it looks.
Who exactly are the vicious ones?
