Well Balto_sis, you seem to try Lovley Little Emo's sstyle, or whatever her usernmae is? I wouldn't exactly rant on this topic if I were you. Okay my opinion. I don't think its xactly wrong, nor right. If your using it to sketch andfind ideasfor a picture.

Okay... I've had trouble finding a style of my own... a style that looks good and is fun to draw, and I'm not ranting on this topic. I'm trying to find a style of my own and trying to help others who have the same problem. Besides, I've been slowly weening myself from LLE's style.

One more thing, I never said I had an original style!

No its noting agaist you. I'm not pointing fingers at anyone. Just saying your style if very similar to LLE's. I, myself find it hard to get a style. I just make random shapes nd piece them togoether to make a canine.

Okay... that's fine. This is a discussion, you can say what you want.(as long as you say it civily)

You're right Balto_Sis, it is mroe than likely that they want to be just like their admired artists. I was raised to not want to be like other people, so I can't say that wanting to be someone else has effected me that much, not art-wise anyway.

Artists do learn from each other, which isn't bad, but the only way they're going to learn to develop their own style is on their own. It takes alot of practice and alot of not looking at references for style (its understandable to look at art work to see if anatomy is correct, but original style is something people need to learn by themselves)

Now when I was learning to draw people and I copied from other pictures to get the feel of drawing them, I didn't know about citing references and had to find out the hard way, and nowadays Im thinking the only way we know of for new artists to realize that they must cite their references is to tell them.

They will copy from other artists, but if they're going to be doing artistic things, they can't duplicate. Art is about creating, not cloning. Like I said, they will "imitate" but they need to stop sometime and go on their own. Its the only way.

I see what you mean... I just think that we'd like to hear how you came up with such a style!

Well, I tried getting as close to the Balto style as possible, but it bored me, so I just kinda did my own thing from there. I never really kknew how different my style was compared to it tho, I just instinctively made legs longer...faces rounder. Little stuff like that makes a big difference, I suppose.

Hey Cat! XD I got a forum account.

And I guess I have something to contribute to this. When I first started out drawing I had a disney-ish/ Balto style.

The first thing I think you should try when making a style is, what do you want to show? What is your style realistic, cartoony?, serious?, funny? Style is as it is a style so the first thing to make a style is one that you like and expresses you. Although, copying the style of an artist you like isn't good because it's not creative and its kind of like taking someone elses personality and using it for yourself. If you dont make a style that has something of you in it, its not a very good one.

I looked at my old style and said, oh, the eyes are too big, I'll try drawing characters without eyes that take up the whole face. And I like detail, well I'll make it detailed then. In my style I really try to make my characters look sweet and or pretty. It's just something I like heheh XD but to some other people they might like cute characters, gross ones, cool ones. It's all good if it is a style.

This is what came out of my quest for a style that fit me, hard to imagine I ever took a Balto or Disney style eh? =P I do however still draw cute art when I feel it though.

One last thing is, you should never call a part of a picture you draw badly, as a style. Say you cant draw hair so you make it look like slime, well it can't be a style, you aren't being true to yourself if you are just taking the easy way out, using what you cant do well and say it's a style. Styles come with more practice and a better knowing of what you want in art.

edit: Oh!, T_T I make so many spelling mistakes.

copying an artist's style is all fine and dandy, but the second you put it online or attempt to sell it, it's art theft.

it's okay to copy a style and then use it to develop your own. That's exactly what Vincent Van Gogh did.

but if you copy a style to intentiomnally gain a profit, you are a complete tool and deserve the punishment you get for it.

That's what I always said about it, if they admire you so much that they steal your art then you should be honored, but they could still give copyrights.

I agree but some people who do do it intentionally may not know that it's wrong.
