Yeah I guess they do, Purina has so many different names for their food it's not even funny. ><

Okay I checked that, and it says that they sell it at the pet store closest to me, I didn't see it there, hmm. I guess I'll have to check again.

I actually have to mix puppy food in with my dogs food, I was recommended my one of those 'Iams Experts' because she is underweight. She was 35 pounds, and now is 41. It's mostly from treats though, and I don't want her to get addicted to the food and become overweight.

I don't think she's underweight, I think that if they saw her, they would say she was normal.

I told them the breed, and usually their large dogs. But mine is small for her breed so.. I'm not sure.

Feeding your dog Canidae's "All Life Stages" dry formula by itself should work wonders, and help out with the problem you've described. They also just released a new "lamb formula" which Milo goes nuts over. I go back and forth between the original formula and the lamb formula. And there are feeding guidelines on the package. Incidentally, I wouldn't continue to mix foods willy-nilly, were I you. Most veterinarians recommend strongly against that. You should pick one and stick with it, and only change gradually, and only if absolutely necessary.

Good luck!

Incidentally, Starsky, most holistic brands have a special diet management/weight loss formula...Canidae included. You might try that...no matter the brand.

Actually, I just read up on that and it recommends that you change your pets food every couple of months.

http://www.dogfoodanalysis.com/changing_foods.htm

I also read up on the ratings for the pet foods all of you posted, here's what they 'scored.'

Iams - One Star
Pedigree - One Star
Purina - One Star
Alpo - One Star
Ol' Roy - It scored 'Crap' which I think is 0.

The only one on here that scored more than a one was Canidae, which scored 4, but I asked the people at the pet store and they don't sell it.

I want to try a dog food called TimberWolfOrganics, which rated 6 stars.

Hmm. That is very interesting. But any vet I've talked to has always said never to change foods like that.

As to the Canidae...I don't know what to say. I managed to get my pet supply store to carry it. I should think that they'd at least be able to get it ordered for you. But you might contact the customer service folks at Canidae to get some suggestions.

As always, good luck, Chastity!

Yes, Archie's tried Pedigree 'Light', Bakers Complete 'Weight Control' and some ProPlan weight loss.

He's not obese. As said, just a kilo overweight. It's due to scraps from my mum. I've been really ill over the last week so excercise has been weak. I have taken him out but not for many long walks.

The hardest thing with Archie's diet is that I don't know what he is crossed with. A border collie should be between 14 and 20kg. But he's not pure collie so I don't want to malnourish him...

My dog Cowboy, which lives at my house if fed Purina, because my two brothers each have a dog at my house, if my brothers' dogs weren't there, I'd probably feed Cowboy this great brand, Black Gold. It's what my other dog, Houdini, which is half mine, which lives at my dad's barn, who owns the other half of Houdini. Houdini has lots of energy and is healthy.
The first ingredient on the Purina bag is corn meal, but the first ingredient on the Black Gold bag is meat meal. So, as you can see, Black Gold must have more meat in it.
Here's the Black Gold website:

I've tried a small bag of Black Gold. My dog didn't like it too much.

I'm trying a new food that is extremely healthy. It's called Innova EVO. Here are the ingredients:

Turkey, Chicken, Turkey Meal, Chicken Meal, Potatoes, Herring Meal, Chicken Fat, Natural Flavors, Egg, Garlic, Apples, Carrots, Tomatoes, Cottage Cheese, Alfalfa Sprouts, Dried Chicory Root, Taurine, Lecithin, Rosemary Extract, Vitamins/Minerals, Viable Naturally Occurring Microorganisms

The first four ingredients contain meat, and there is no grains, which are hard for dogs to digest.

It scored a 6 out of 5, so it must be good.

That really sucks, they are pet experts and they don't even have really any healthy food, and unfortunatly, we don't have a car so that's the only pet food store we can go to.

They do sell Innova EVO, however. It's really expencive though, so if my dog doesn't like it, too bad!

My vet has told me the same thing about changing foods, but heck..I would get tired of eating bread every day for every meal, wouldn't you?

After this food, I'm not changing it anymore, I might mix it with the 'Innova EVO Red Meat' every once in a while, for variety.

I find it pathetic that pet experts and vets all recommend Iams, It's the same price (If not more!) as the healthy dog foods, but contains the same ingredients as No-Name or other store brand dog foods. Corn, Dyes, By-products, Fillers.. Stuff that no dog needs or should have. Plus, it doesn't look good, smell good, or taste good (Based off my dogs judgement.

Oh, and thanks!

I feed mine Wellness lamb formula but I wish I could get my hands on some Canidae, Solid Gold, Evo....something! I've checked all the pet supply and feed stores in the area. No one carries or will eventually carry those higher quality brands. I'm definately not ordering from the internet; too much hastle when he's doing fine on the stuff he's got. Still, I kind of regret not being able to feed something at least CLOSE to raw(if I had the time I would definately go for a BARF diet).

Arguss has had a long history with bad food. He would get skin rashes, filthy teeth, awful stool, the works. Since he was a puppy he's gone through brands like Pro Plan, Alpo, Pedigree(ugh), Beniful(triple ugh) and even Old Boy which would just tear up his stomach to the point where he would be throwing up continuously. After his first and also very last run in with Old Boy I began to do research. It finally began to sink into my skull that Arguss was very very sensitive to food. Now that I look back on it I'm thinking: what in the world possesed us to buy such awful food? It was pure lack of knowledge. Higher quality food was around, but until he started having severe reactions to food I didn't know anything was wrong at all. I didn't think food would have anything to do with rashes and I thought giving him a vitamin would help the stool problem, the idea of the nasty food having something to do with health problems was non-existant because I didn't know it was such a nasty food.

I learned so much from http://www.dogfoodproject.com. I never dreamed that roadkill and euthanized animals were present in foods like Pedigree. I never knew most low-quality dog foods are made up of mostly yellow corn(causes extreme allergies in some dogs), disgusting by-products(hooves, horns, beaks, feathers, EVERYTHING on the animal but the real meat) and even sawdust(look for cellouse). I had no idea that most brands of poor quality food had ingredients that, if feed of a dog's lifetime, will eventually kill the animal. When you buy a bad quality food you are actually getting ripped off. You pay for dog food but you get fillers and chemicals with fatal potential. If everyone knew about how crumby brands like Purina and Science Diet were the prices on them would drop to the center of the Earth.

Check out http://www.dogfoodproject.com ,it's a great site that offers a HUGE wealth of information, no matter what you feed your dog. You may be surprised that even some of the "expensive" foods can be just as dangerous as the cheap ones.

Yes, I saw that website too. It's really sad, and I didn't know either. The foods weren't super cheap and they claimed to be healthy, I never actually looked at the ingredients.

Corn, and other fillers are hard for dogs to digest, (For you people that didn't know) and, if you check the ingredients, corn or corn meal is the primary ingredient. (The first ingredient on the list, it means there's the most of it)

Also, check the last ingredients. Why do dogs need dyes? Who cares if the food is green, purple or black, it's natural!

The AAFCO's definition of "Meat Meal" is “the rendered product from mammal tissues, exclusive of blood, hair, hoof, horn, hide trimmings, manure, stomach and rumen contents except in such amounts as may occur unavoidably in good processing practices.”

They claim that BHA is a nutrient "found in mothers milk." Well, BHA along with BHT have been banned from human foods, tell me why you would want your dog to eat that.

Nothing breaks my heart more then when people feed their dogs Ol' Roy...

Anyway, my dog loves the Innova EVO food. That's all we feed her now, Innova EVO canned food, treats, and dry food.

Terrierqueen, you should check out this website too, http://www.dogfoodanalysis.com/dog_food ... /index.php
