I have had used voice commands with Shadow and he does listen. I have also tried using the halti. He hated that and chewed it up. I bought him a prong collar and used it once and he responds to that and my voice when he pulls. Before I had the choke or prong collar I did use voice commands and tugging on his leash. Training him in my backyard helps a lot when I train him. Thanks everyone for the advice. It was really helpful.

Starsky wrote: True, it would work instantly but I think that they should only be used as a last resort. Change of tone and general handling without use of tools should first be used. It's worked with quite a few dogs I know. Just the simple, firm tone.
Choke chains and prong collars are good but, yeah, last resort. Like with my dad's dog. Very stubborn but the choke chain works, took a few tugs but it works. I don't use these on my dog because he's too gentle and they'd probably really scare him. He responds to the firm tone.
Sometimes vocal discipline can be more effective than physical..
LOL. well, I know, and I've tried a harness, a muzzle [halti], voice commands, and everything. It cost my mom alot of money. And the only one that seemed to work was the prong collar. So if you want to save money, buy that first. XD
It might of just been my dog though, because she was young when I tried all of those things.

Yeah, but try the voice first. Before the tool. That could save you money.
If that doesn't work after a few tries, get the choke chain or prong collar. I really don't like halters.. I'm not surprised that your dog didn't like them.

WHAT I DID WITH MY DOG WAS PUT SOME TREATS IN MY SOCK ON THE SIDE HE WALKS ON AND IN THAT SIDES POCKET. THEN HE WANTED TO STAY BY MY SIDE MOST OF THE TIME. I PRETENDED I DIDN'T KNOW THE TREATS WERE THERE AND PRAISED HIM FOR STAYING BY MY SIDE. I DID THIS ON EVERY WALK FOR ABOUT 5 MONTHS. AFTER THAT HE JUST STAYED BY MY SIDE. WAITING FOR PRAISE!!

Maya8 - Uh...one of the rules is to not type in caps...
Anyway, I would suggest getting a special brand of harness that refrains the dog from running ahead and pulling you. It doesn't hurt them, it just has a metal ring near the chest area and when the dog pulls, the ring puts pressure on a pressure point on the dog's chest and he stops running. They're very useful.
They look like this :

Yes, as Kari had said, those are very useful. I am very good with dogs, and its a funny story I could tell later but right now.. Another good type of collar is the 'Gentle Leader'. Its very useful, expecially for labs and retrievers.
They go over the muzzle, and when the dog pulls, you can pull back on the leash, and it turns there head. I know, my Aunt Michelle and Uncle Erick have two lab (ones a mix). And I suggest it to them, and it works great on Penchy and Sasha. They were poorly trained by them, so this collar really helps.
Here is a picture of one.
They allso have other ones that connect to the collar, to ensure that if it comes off you still have control of the dog. :33

My dog didn't like the halti either. Just be the boss and make him keep it on. Firm handling seems to be needed with your dog. That's how my dog needs to be trained.

Yes, excactly.
Oooh.. I really don't like halters. As said, I wouldn't want my nose yanked back and fourth. Harnesses, choke chains and prong collars are much more fair on the dog.. he has to have some freedom.
