Err ..Err.. And err XD
I hate SMS language, even on IMs....Those "u".."ur" Are so superly annoying me,first of all,I find them a little "sub-cultured" xD Like it shows how "dum" you are and lazy to write 3 small letters and say "YOU"..I find stupid AND annoying...I never talk like that,I reallly hate it...
I don't find OMG or brb so annoying, the words like "u""r" "l8er" is annoying.
I guess neither do on Shoutbox or Forums Should allow that, because it's purely,STUPID.
Grammar problemed people should try to improve their language.

It's a shame, but with our modern culture, grammar and expression (in written form) has taken a nose dive back into the Middle Ages. And it all started with the introduction of the internet back in the late eighties/early 90s (not sure when the actual release to the public was). When "chat language" and "smileys" became de rigeur, with the advent of chat rooms, it became a cultural norm for internet users (especially pre-teens, teenagers and college-aged folks) to make use of that even in non-chat communications. And now, with text messaging for cell phones ("SMS"), it's only gotten worse.
You'll notice that, at most, I only ever use smileys and simple chat acronyms in posts and conversation here ("lol", "rofl"...but I NEVER use things like "oic", "laterz", "w/e", etc. To me, use of those constitutes the very HEIGHT of laziness). I come from the very last generation of teenagers who did not have the internet to play with, and big plug-in bag phones for cars rather than tiny, hand-held cell phones. And we used Sony Walkmans (and other knock-offs of that design) rather than iPods (which, obviously, didn't exist). At the risk of sounding like an old man, whittling away with a pen knife on a piece of driftwood while chewing some tobacco (which I don't do...lol; and I am NOT old...not yet. Heh heh): in my day, we still read, like, books n'stuff, and so I am able to sit through a longer post and read it without getting frustrated. We actually had to either HAND-WRITE stuff, or type it on a TYPEWRITER (though basic word processing programs, as clunky and primitive as they were then, were available for the basic, primitive and clunky computers of the time). Sentence construction and grammar (and spelling) actually still MEANT something. And those who screwed those things up only did so because they were poor at grammar, spelling and sentence construction. NOT because they were purposefully trying to misspell, or be grammatically idiotic.
For all the advances in technology, those particular advances have caused the "internet and cell phone generations" to become habitually lazy and indifferent to good grammar, sentence construction, etc.
It's a shame. While teenagers certainly have access to much more technology than their counterparts did even as little as 15-20 years ago, those teenagers of the past could generally write circles around them...with regard to all the hallmarks of good writing: sentence construction, grammar, and spelling. How sad for the current state of affairs.

I really, really hate SMS language!! It is the most annoying language ever!! LOL is acceptable, because it is easier than saying laugh out loud, or writing *laugh laugh* which is even more annoying. If you want to show you are laughing, LOL is alright. But the rest of SMS language (or text talk) is rubbish. It's hard to read and looks horrible. I hate it!! BaltoSeppala is right, it is a real shame. People nowadays write in SMS language and it looks awful and is another type of LAZY. Why can't people write normally? It is a shame that most people (I am not one of them though, for I really hate SMS language) write like this now. Grammer isn't taught in school's here anymore, which is not helpful to this problem. It is annoying, very. I am glad it is band here. And to all who use it, SPEAK ENGLISH PLEASE!

Seppala...sigh...I totally agree with you. It's to bad that we can't write as well anymore...and you're not an old man.

I know this is an older topic that isn't getting anything anymore, but I thought I would bring this up:
Quote: 6. Do not write in SMS language - this is annoying for the readers. Use ponctuation. For example, do not write "any1 like" but "What do you think about my drawing?" And also this: Quote:
And many people do this in the shoutbox, and it is MOST annoying. Its like no one cares, even when you mention. The only time they care is if you name is in green, and normally they go back to SMS the next day. I really think this rule should be enforced more.
As the image says, "Here, we talk a language that humans can understand..."

I think that quote is funny. XD
It isn't much harder to type 1 or 2 more letters per word.. people do it all the time. Amazing
I guess they would rather get in trouble or yelled at instead of wasting 2 seconds.. ah well..

I know. It really bugs me how people can't take the time to spend at the most FIVE extra seconds to type out a few extra letters. I mean, even on cell phones I don't type like that unless I need to write something longer. XD..
I don't get how people can be so lazy. I mean, I sit here at this computer all the time, yes. But I go to school online. I DO go outside sometimes, but if you lived here you wouldn't go outside either. XD I live in a flippin' development place type thing with houses that look all the same. And it sucks, I MISS the green forests and stuff.
But I DO take those FIVE extra seconds to type things out. -_-

LOL I'm on the computer alot too, mostly only on school days since I haven't started yet. On weekends, I'm not usually on, but even when I'm in a rush to type something, I wont use that much SMS.. Not even on cell phones unless I run out of room. It seems people who talk like this are getting worse and worse every day..

And sometimes when I REALLY need to do something quick I write 'brb', but not normally by its self unless I am on a messenger. I try to type it out, "I will be right back guys" or "Be back in a sec!"... Something like that. And it IS a 'No-no' Quote: 6. Do not write in SMS language - this is annoying for the readers. This annoys me when your trying to read a post to your own topic! like you post something like "Please join." than one person after you type "I'll be bck 2 jn in abt 1 hr." I mean, I'm trying to figure out what their saying first of all, and then when you finally do its annoying because that is so easy to type out, I mean what are you wasting? One half second? Oh my gosh! Not a half a second, you're gonna lose it sooner or later, why not use it to type out a simple word such as "back" instead of "bck" I mean, it shouldn't take you longer than one millesecond to type one letter in bck to make it back, I mean come on people! This seriosuly annoys me, chatspeak..or SMS, is so annoying for people who like to type things out, and they don't know what you are saying!

Indeed, Yoru. Its completely annoying when someone just speaks like this and you have to sit there for 10-15 mintues trying to figure out what in the world it says.
"U, i cnt unersan u su plzzz leav mi tpc."
I can't even understand myself. Seriously. I would totally say something like that. ;D Speak a language those 'things' can understand. LOL...
Seriously. I used to not mind SMS when it was just like "u, r, y" and stuff. But now... its like... How do these have any relation to any words? They dont. Its just.... baby talk, really.
